Default Dim Climate Control Repairs

From a post on the forum, I located this guy on ebay that can fix the chronic "dim display" problem with C5 automatic climate control systems. And he claims it is only around $40 to do so. Hmmm... My display is only read-able at night now, plus a few lights behind the buttons are out thus making it hard to know which buttons to press. Anyone have any experience with this repair guy? Sounds almost too good to be true. 5 year warranty as well.

..... and.. then next question. How hard is it to remove the unit so it can be sent in? Any instructions on that? And can you still drive the car with the a/c controls removed?

Here is the ebay link btw:

The unit unplugs easily. You do have to remove the center console pieces, but that's very easy.

A very irritating problem with the A/C unit. This is a helpful recommendation. Thanks for the heads up.

If you do send your display in let me know if your happy with the repairs...

My display seems to have moods sometimes its okay sometimes its impossible to read, except at night....

I almost want to say it has somethng to do with the voltage... .I'm playing russian ruelett with an old battery but I swear it gets a tad brighter after I have driven my vette for an hour or so...

Yeah, my display gradually went very dim. At first I could just thump the front of the display and it would come back bright as ever. It worked for about 3 months. Now I could smack it with a sledgehammer and it wouldn't get brighter. I think if I have to disassemble the console to get the unit out, I'll probably pick up a dash kit (maybe the photogenic ones.. look nice). The climate control unit has been the only sore spot on my Vette... (so I guess I shouldn't really complain)

The repair consists or resoldering 8 chips on the board. I did mine myself and worked great. I had the equipment though, probably be cheaper in the long run just to send it in.

I have the same problem. I just ripped my interior apart today and unplugged the climate control unit. I used the instructions provided by a member of this forum. Here's a link to it. It wasn't hard at all.

http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c5/pat...rInstall.shtml

I have opened up the climate control unit and am heating up the soldering iron as we speak and attempting to re-solder the chips and do the repair myself. I'll post pics here later. I hope this works.

PS- Many thanks to Ed Bon for such awesome instructions on removing the climate comtrol unit.

Default Instructions on which chips?

Ok,
I am searching, but not finding the instructions on WHERE to solder. Are there any on the net?
Thanks

I tried the solder method. Infact I even took my unit to work and one of the techs who solder's PC boards all day touched up every joint, no luck. I sent it off to the ebay guy as mentioned, and he fixed it. Not sure what he did, but he did. If I were you dont even bother trying to solder it.

Yeah... I just got done soldering the chips and the display leads and had no luck. The display came on very bright for about 5 seconds then went out again. I'm gonna send it off to be fixed. Now I have no AC until it gets repaired
But it's better than paying $400 for a new part.
