I'm getting the windshield replaced on my 1999 vette. So I set up my appointment. And then I called my insurance company (american family) to make sure they would cover the replacement. I have full coverage w/ glass, so they say it will be no problem. I ask if there is anything that could go wrong, making them not pay for the work, and they say NO, YOU HAVE COVERAGE, WE WILL PAY IT (remember that). So I have it set up to be replaced on Friday.
Then while talking to a different glass guy, he said I should request OEM glass, and not the "company" glass they us ally use. So I call up american family again and ask them if I can do that, and they say no cuz the car is more than 3 years old. So I say okay, whatever.
I then get another idea, so I call the glass company up and ask if I can pay the difference between the company glass and the OEM glass so I can get the OEM glass. So the girl looks into it, and it turns out that the HAVE to use OEM (GM) glass anyways cuz there is no aftermarket glass for the vettes.
So I call american family again to let them know that the glass company has to use OEM glass cuz there is no aftermarket glass to use and they say it has to be approved before the work can be done cuz it will cost $1500.
So right now I'm waiting for a call from somebody to tell me if America Family will accept OEM replacement glass. But as I wait I'm thinking...why would they charge me for glass coverage on my insurance if its impossible to get replacement glass if something happens.
So I'm a little pissed right now. Has anybody else ever had to go through something like this?
Had a body shop fixing and restoring Corvettes for 25 years. They
will have to use OEM and they will pay for it. You are just dealing
with clerks that have to have an OK from up the food chain. Let them
do their dance and they will be fine. AmFam is a good company. Gene
First and foremost $1500.00 is total Even a new HUD windshield shouldn't cost that much. With that out of the way, The only issue I had with my insurance is over the cost of the gasket around the glass. Most glass companies will insist that you buy a new one because they can't guarantee the job based upon the condition of the old one. My insurance company wouldn't cover it...they said reuse the old one. That is $299.00. As far as the glass, my agent didn't bat an eyelash over it. As it turns out the crack that I had was able to be repaired so my carrier was only out $69.00. I don't believe that in the end you will have a problem but it is a shame that you have to go through the hassle.

*** edit*** Also, you shouldn't have to even talk to your insurance company. A good glass shop should have done that for you and let you know if there were any issues.
I would just give the claim number to the glass company and tell them to replace it. They will charge the insurance company, if there is a problem let them hash it out, after all you have the glass coverage.
Insurance companies charge you more for a vette anyway so they know what has to be done. Sounds like the person you were speaking to don't really know what they are talking about and reading from a text book.
the $1500 if the the windshield and weather stripping, both new from the dealer
and I will always talk to both sides (insurance and company) before having work done. I learned that the hard way a few years ago for my Dental insurance. I went in to have my dental work done. The bill was $1600, turns out I was only covered up to $800, so I had to pay the other $800 out of pocket. All because I didnt call my insurance ahead of time to make sure I was covered. I learned that the hard way. And I dont not want to get a new windshield installed, then a month later get a bill for $1500, because something was done right.
I will always double and triple check everything to make sure both sides (insurance and replacement company) know who is paying for what, BEFORE the work is done.

and yes, when I was talking to the American Family person, she was reading it right off the screen. "if the car is more than 2 years old, OEM glass can not be used"
NEVER FORGET, you are NOT in good hands with----- (insert insurance company name)---. They are in business to make money. ANY ad you see about helping you is BS when it come time for a claim. I've been there 3 times with different companies, residence and auto, and they were all the same.
