[Z06] Steering Wheel Lock Up
es of this happening? What happened after it locked.....how fast were you going.....any damage and/or injuries?
Tom
As you read down through it you'll find some pictures of my car taken just before roadside assistance picked it up out of a driveway that someone helped me get it into in order to clear the roadway. My short version of the account of the incident is also contained later in the thread. The lock recently failed again (WITHOUT INCIDENT) and was again repaired at GM's cost. One thing I can say about them - they stand behind their product even when it hurts. I haven't done a CLB in my car simply because of the history of the vehicle - I don't want to do anything that might create a "not our fault" situation.
For what it's worth, I have twice requested the lock be completely removed from my vehicle - this obviously hasn't happened yet.

You would think by now that this problem would be well known and taken care of by C5 owners.

The problem with the column lock is that it may fail to properly unlock, leaving your car stranded where it was parked and requiring a tow truck.
The column lock bypass prevents the column lock from activating when you park the car.
Ready for the weekend
Cranked my #2 baby over and my DIC read "Service Steering Wheel turn ignition off and wait 10 secs". I followed the directions and once I cranked it back up, the DIC read "Steering Locked". At that point, I had no choice but to call my Mech and he only told me to repeat the directions which I did and nothing happened (Still was locked).
Checked my manual and nothing was covered about the problem.
Last result was to call the dealer, which I did.
I thank God, that it didn't happen while driving, seeing how I had just driven the day before to San Diego from my house, which is a hour and few minutes drive. Needless to say, that I was opening the Z06 up
The computer did what it was designed to do I think in my case. When I called the dealer, told him my problem, he asked for my vin#. Once I gave him the number, he then told me, that there was a "RECALL ON MINE". Now of course I felt that I should have received something in the mail regarding this problem (SAFETY) and was very upset.
He explained, that it shouldn't happen while driving and hadn't heard of any cases where it had while driving (If it had, someone else would own GM was his exact words). What the dealer do as it was explained.
When your car comes in for any service (dealer only of course) they check your vin and make the correction at no cost (Covered under warranty). He gave me the Road Service # and they were there within 35 mins with flat bed.
Car was worked on the following day. Part was replaced and I was back up and running that evening. Scary thought of it doing something like that while driving but since the repair (a month or so ago) Haven't had anymore problems and had forgotten about it until I read this.
Thanks God
for the computer doing it's job.
