Laron, Nice write up and nice gains for what you are doing. But... you must go to long tube headers with high flow cats, might as well go to a Z06 Ti cat back too. Then... you will get the most out of the other mods. The headers on top of everything else will be a real hard kick. Your tranny won't last too much longer so may as well get the high stall unit an 3.42 gears.

Incidentally I researched the 2001 LS6/LS1 differences three years ago when I did my mods all at once. As said the block and all else in the short block is the same on 2001 up LS1 engines. Except one thing, the pistons on 2001 Z06's were made of a better grade of aluminum than the LS1 pistons were. But, that difference also went away in mid -2001 production when the oil burning and piston slap issues resulted in all piston rings and pistons also, being the same from then on, but for sure from 2002 up.

GM itself created the myth that the Z06 engine was way, way different than the LS1 in their efforts to promote the Z06. Remember, back then the Z06 was a "cure" for the failing FRC sales. Well we all know the Z06 was a smashing success, but GM press releases failed to mention that just about all of the "new" Z06 stuff was put into the 2001 LS1 also.

The HUD was not an option at all on the 2001 Z06, period. It was standard on the 2002 up though.

As far as if the engine is Z06, LS6 or LS1, grind the numbers off the stamp pad and no one will be able tell what it was originally assembled as. So I say it is an LS6 engine, and should be called that what it is!

HP Tune is the way to go. I gained 12hp and it seemed like it just clean up everything. My 02 is more crisp. Black 02 Z06 - Halltech T1, X-pipe, Borla Stingers, 375rwhp/360rwtq. My tuner told me that my car was a little above average when compared to others. Most cars with similar mods needed headers to gain 375hp range. With LT headers, I'll probably around 390 range.
