GM fights to stave off Bankruptcy? spin off for Corvette?
what do you all think of the likely hood of GM imploding?
vs filing for Chapter11, restructuring and innovating itself back to
health?
could this mean Chevrolet Corvette moves to its own car Group?

That would shock me that they would put the Corvette under it's own car group. But I guess together with XLR it would be interesting!

Even if GM files for bankruptcy, it will still keep the corvette line as is since its a halo car for the company and still turns a healthy profit. A downturn in the economy, coupled with bankruptcy protection might be trouble though.
The last thing GM or the corvette fans need is for GM to spin off the corvette. A spinoff would mean that in order to keep traffic flowing at a corvette dealership, it would need high volume products like a 'gasp' a corvette SUV and maybe even a sedan. That would be certain death for the vette.
Just look what has happened to Porsche. Its surviving on sales of the Cayenne SUV and a now, new Luxury Sedan is slated to come out in the future. The base 911 is still struggling though, who knows how long it will survive. The cayman, boxster, cayenne and porsche sedan may live on but eventually, they will kill off the car that got it all started, the 911, if they don't get back to their roots. The same would happen to the vette.

I'd have to agree that the government would not let GM go down the tubes. Too big of an impact on the economy. I doubt that they would spin off the Vette - not high enough volume there.

Corvette will probably be kept in the Chevrolet family. As someone said it is a halo car (for Chevy). And if GM has a bread and butter line, it is Chevrolet....lots of truck sales, SUV's....

GM and Ford bankruptcies are inevitable. It's not a question of if, it is a matter of when, and consensus bets are probably 2-3 years down the road. Their long term debt, legacy costs, and shrinking market share are unavoidable obstacles. They are no different than the steel industries, airlines, and textile industries which preceded them in the United States. The fact that they can only move inventory by selling cars below cost speaks volumes of the deadend which faces them.

GM's problem is their Unions and Pensions. NOT the lack of sales on the cars themselves. It cost more money in pensions to build (1) car than it does for the cost of the steele in the entire car. "FACT"
The unions are sucking them dry.
If GM went into the insurance business they would be the third largest insurance company in the WORLD just based off of their employees and retirees alone. "This is a fact, not a blanket statement"
They need to restructure their pension plans, NOT go BK.

The overhead for pensions, Healthcare and union wages is what is killin GM, they have so much overhead in retiree care alone they are making crappier cheaper cars so they can stay afloat.
If the u.s. government (read you and I here!) can keep the likes of chrysler, (remember their bankruptcy?) Amtrak, which loses and costs you and I untold millions annually, and the airlines afloat there's no way they will let GM go belly up.

GM's spin-off child "Delphi" just filed for bankruptcy protection and guess where GM gets it's parts? You can't build a Vette without parts so they are all in the same boat without oars.
