Default Rear diff (warranty)

Looking for some advice from y'all. I have an 02 that is going in for some warranty work on Monday. I have a leaky rear end and the front right headlight is grinding.

What I'm looking for is advice on upgrading the gears since I'm running 2.73's in the A4 right now. I'm just not sure if having the dealer replace the gears with 3.42's is a wise move as I want to keep the warranty (I have 45k and 3.5 years left on the extended warranty).

I figured since they'd have the rear end torn down, I might as well shoot for the upgrade, I actually have a pretty good dealer and I've been pleased with their work.

Has anyone else done this?

If it's a dealer you can work with, give it a shot....

I would definitely check with the dealer and see if they will cancel your warranty for that. Some will, some may look the other way. Chances are that if they are doing this as a warranty repair, they will not go to a gear set that was not offered on the A4. Perhaps you could at least talk them into going with the 3.15s. Good luck with this.

I know the new vette's have 3.42's, guess I'll just have to poke around when I'm talkin' to them on monday, you know, "hypothetically" speaking.

C5 Auto's have either 2.73 or 3.15... and manual shift models have the 3.42

For the C6, you still need to get a manual shift to have the 3.42

Autos actually have 2.56 gears in them now. In '06 models, all automatic transmissioned Vettes have the 6 speed automatic transmission with the paddle shifters and the 2.56 gears. There is no more "performance axle" option for the automatics.

In '05 the autos had either 2.73s or 3.15s and the 4 speed automatic transmission.

All manual transmission C5 and C6 Vettes have 3.42s in them.

Wonder if any C6 people have dropped a 3.42 rear into a 6 speed automatic. That would have to be one kick a$$ Corvette.

People over there have pondered this, but it seems that the issue would be traction with the way that new 6 speed transmission is geared.

Indeed there are some over there who have discussed going to 2.73s to improve acceleration without running into significant traction issues.

But not to stray off the original poster's concerns, has anyone pointed out yet that he will need PCM programming if he goes to the 3.42s?

Are the dealers capable of helping him in that regard?

I have the predator that supposedly reconfigures to 3.42 but I don't have much faith in tuners (actually didn't see much of a difference when I first hooked it up). I've had it out of the vehicle and programmed back to stock for "safety" purposes. I think I'll just have a conversation with my service guy about how "mod" friendly they are. He's a pretty straight up guy, if they are ok with certain mods I already have a custom vette shop standing by. Appreciate everyone's input!

Default I have made this move

I have an 02 and I put in 342's and I am very happy with the switch. I also put in a 2800 stall and had the LS1 edit done. With all that change, it has caused some issues with spinning tires. Run flats were like glass... I use the Toyo Proxies now and its better but not there yet. When it comes to my warranty, I didn't tell them and they didn't ask. The only issue is if you have to replace it. It will be replaced by your vin number and it will be given the original rear-end that was ordered with the car. Good luck !
