Default TPM Sensor Question

Question re: TPM sensors...

What sort of maintenance or replacement is required on the TPM sensors? I've read that the battery life is anywhere from 5 - 10 years??? The car I'm about to purchase is a '99, so should I expect to have to deal with the sensors soon? How do you know when the battery or sensor malfunctions?

Are the batteries replaceable, or do you have to replace the entire sensor? How much $$$ to replace batteries and/or sensors?

As always, thanks for the info!

The 99 sensors are reaching their life's end. New sensors will cost you 350 dollars plus install. your original sensors could live for a few more years but I know many people who have had to replace them. Replacing the batteries are very tough, and hardly worth the effort.. There was a company that was replacing the batteries but has since gone belly up. Some people on the forum are offering to replace the batteries at a minimal cost... Gene Culley at Fred Beans ( a forum vendor ) has the best prices on sensors... you have to use year specific sensors for your car...unfortunatly the ones for you are are the more expensive ones. your sensors are 97-00 year specific.

I'd plan to set aside enough to get new sensors. Like Evil-Twin said, they are about to the end of their expected life span (I've heard between 5-8 years). When it goes out, you will get a warning on the DIC that the TPS needs attention.
