In the next several weeks I am going to have the alternator on my 98 chromed.
Should I take it apart and have the guts replaced as a prevenative measure? It works fine and have had no problems.
How difficult is it to strip the guts out? Has anyone done this?
I know about the guy who strips alternators and has them chromed. I think I can get it done cheaper and faster at another place. There are several other pieces that I am going to have chromed also. I am sending it to a quality place and I have seen their work.
The pics below are where the chrome alternator is going. If anyone has any comments or insights please post!
Thanks,
Bob
I just did mine and had it powder coated. Its not difficult to disassemble. You have 3 wires that you will have to un-solder and a bearing you will have to press out. Other than that, its not that bad.
Hey Bob, the chrome alternator is going to look great and really compliment your already awesome looking engine compartment!
Sent mine to Metron Chrome to have chromed.
They do excellent work!

Jim thanks for the compliment that’s cool to hear from a true corvette enthusiast/corvette forum legend like you! I have converted from stainless steel to chrome from CEC, the difference in quality is night and day.
Thanks,
Bob
Hey bob: just surfing through and your compartment caught my eye. Gotta stop and say that it looks very nice. Keep up the good work.
May I ask a question. Did you clear coat the coolant tank after you piantd it or is leavig the gloss paint by itself ok? I'm thinking about painting mine, just curious...

Thanks for your time.
Very nice...very sweeet. keep up the cool look...
The coolant tank and the washer tank were painted be a local shop. I believe they put the clear in with the paint. The FRC's and radiator covers were painted by kewl. I hope this helps and thanks for the compliment.

Hey Bob, looking GOOD!! You are right , chrome wins!

Thanks Stu, I just need a maggie to get this slug running! Yours looks hot!
Can you buy a new chrome and or polished one? does anybody sell them.
I havent seen any alternators housings pre chromed, but that would be nice.

about a week ago on ebay there were new chromed ones for 500. he also did core exchange too i cant seem to find it now.
I will have to look for that on ebay. I think I can get it done cheaper than 500. I am down in Sandestin everyonce in a while, you live in a beautiful area.

thank you Bob...
...glad to be of help
I bought mine new and chromed...through Ecklers...(not at MSRP)
...but the cheap way out is send it out for rebuild and chrome...
Z06-Jim is certainly one reliable source that the quality of his chrome is good...and I understand that he sent his out...
I have not seen a polished Alternator for sale...
...I do have one in my garage that will become a project one day...
If you decide to work on yours you might borrow an alternator until you finish chroming or polishing yours...(if no one local has one to lend you...Ill ship mine to you)
I just had mine taken apart at an auto electric shop. Actually 2 different shops before I could find someone to do it.
I have an 04' and my alternetor is different than other C5 years. Mine was late in the production year and think I got one of the same alternators they are using in the C6's.
The guys in the shop never saw one of these before. The stator was actually sealed in w/ some type of silicon and the diodes were soldered to the back half. It was a PITA to take apart.
In any event it is apart and going to the chromer. I am also having the bracket done at the same time.
...did you..? ...didnt you have to remove another pully to extricate the bracket...? ..that I think would be a problem too
Not Yet...bought a new one from GmParts direct for $53.00 shipped.
Once its chromed I will make the swap. From what I understand the pulley you speak of will need to be pulled. I've read it is not that hard w/ the right tools.
The alternator I bought off ebay which came off a crashed car w/ 500 miles on it. I stole it at $50.00.
Didn't want to mess with the one on the car in case something baddd happened.

Stu thanks for the offer! Would you have a spair Maggie laying around the garage? I could really use that ! I plan on having the arm that the alternator hangs on chromed. So the vette will go down for several weeks. Then things should be looking pertty under the hood then!
Thanks,
Bob
