I have had the same problem at times .
2 things to check :
the ignition key may not be inserted all the way , or inserted all the way to start the car then slightly tugged back out .
or the contacts on the chip in the key have to be cleaned .
Usually when that happens to me , I turn off the ignition , pull the key out , then re-insert it and start the car .
that was the beginning of my ignition switch going out.
Do you have a heavy key chain or multiple keys on the keyring?
Try your spare key(s) if you have them
clean the resistor on the keys.
when and if the car gets to the point that you turn the key and nothing happens...
send me a PM and I can tell you what to do next. (I dont get to C5 gen much anymore)
I would turn the key and the gauges would sweep, lights would work, etc. If I would wait a few minutes it would start like nothing ever happened.
I actually had this exact problem and it took nearly a year to get from the occasional SECURITY light to the car not starting.

Funny that you mention that because when I first tried to crank it nothing happened. I have tried on and off about three times and so far nothing.
Ignition switch, what else is going to go wrong with this car. It is a good thing I love it cause I am tired oof electrical problems.
Rubbing alcohol in a Q-tip and clean the pellet. After that put a little more alcohol on the pellet on both sides and put the key in the ignition and pull it in and out about a dozen times. That will clean the contacts in the ignition.
It happen to me all the time in my older cars and thay worked everytime. Lint and dust will build up on the pellet over time and transfer to the contacts making them dirty also.
