<---- This guy is a dumbass. There always has to be one that takes an easy tech tip and f's it up. I got it all apart and soldered all the resistors, plugged it back in and it worked, sweet!!! About 30 seconds later I smelled smoke and the display went out, WTF So I pull it back out, get it back apart, and low and behold I see a large blob of solder up in the corner of the circuit board underneath it a burnt line in the board. I guess in my excitement to get it put back together I missed that I dropped a blob of solder on the board thereby shorting it.

It's boxed up and on it's way to be rebuilt. Hopefully nothing else is fried.

I tried this method and it didn't work. My backlights still don't work on the AC buttons, however the backlight for the display works. Is there something else I should try to fix the bulbs behind the buttons?

My car goes in to the dealer tomorrow for a new display.
I'll see if they will let me keep the old one to play around with and find a way to repair the button lights.

The dealership replaced the unit but, I was unable to keep the old as they had to send it back to GM. So I won't be able to tear into it and look at the button lights.

Of course, my HVAC is totally different from all of the others posted. What a surprise.

Still: I soldiered on and soldered all the surface mounted resistors nonetheless.

Success!! Works like new!!

There is a good write up here:
http://www.thelapd.com/bezel.htm

Follow these instructions up til the point where the climate control surround is removed. At that point you won't need to go any further.

Then there are just a few screws holding the A/C control unit in and after that you can follow the instructions in this post.

a 15w pencil should be fine, you want rosin core solder, go to radio shack, they will have everything you need.

Thanks to those that posted pics. You guys saved me $45. Mine looked like the later pics as well. Tried a Cold Heat iron and touched up the surface mount components only. I have a pretty good idea of which one was really bad since when I hit one end with the iron it slid off the board. Repositioned with pliers and hit it again. I didn't add any more solder. Has been working great all week.

Does anyone have a part # on this piece.
I am curious how much a new Automatic Climate Control unit costs.

I took mine out and soldered it last week and it works great and I have the satisfaction of fixing it myself. I guess procrastination paid off this time, because I was going to send it off earlier this year, but was too busy. Anyway, just got back from getting new Kumhos MXs' and an alignment, what a difference. Thanks RPOZ4Z for the info. If you're ever in Denver, I owe you a beer
