what chemical is needed to remove anodized coating?

anodize is an anodic coating of either chromic acid or more commonly sulphuric acid and water. Caustic soda is used to strip it. Anything with a high ph will do it but make sure you rinse very well because whatever high ph you use to strip the anodize will attack the aluminum. perfect world would be a caustic (high ph) strip then neutralize in a mild nitric acid and water mix.

What exactly are you trying to strip? How big? If you have any plating shops in your area it takes about 1 minute to strip and neutralize anodized aluminum. You should be able to walk in get stripped and walk out very cheap. If you are doing large parts I think it would be well worth it. I used to do this for people all the time when I was running a plating/anodizing shop.
