Default Homelink mod almost done (PICS!)

First off, I had to fire off IE (yuck!) b/c firefox wasn't working with the image buttons for some reason....

Well after reading the homelink thread the other day I knew I had to have it. Off to the junkyard I went. For $25 (core charge to take anything from the lot) I got a '00 Cirrus visor w/homelink.

First I demolished the Cirrus visor to get the homelink module out and took off my visor to operate on it.

The homelink module.

The visor split open.

Placement and marking of module.

I used a putty knife to protect my visor while I dremeled the cut.

The finished cut.

Well I couldn't figure how to get the plastic piece separated from the rest of the module so I used a marker temporarily to color it black.

How do I get this separated without breaking it?????

Well once I figure out how to get The homelink apart the rest of the way I will solder the wires and sew back up my visor. Figured I would just post the progress for others, easy mod to do.

It snabs off, go to the homelink site to program, don't use your garage door instructions. I glued mine back together.

This is a really cool add on. I did this about 2-3 years ago and like it a lot. FYI, I put a few drops of hot glue on the sides of the HomeLink. This helped in keeping it nice and tight once it was placed in the cut out. Good luck w/ the rest of your project.

How do you unsnap the front (buttons), from the back (module inside the visor), on the unit. Someone mentioned tabs, but could use some advice on separating, without breaking plastic.

Thanks

The bezel (tan piece) pulls away from the module. There are tabs that snap into slots on the module. You should be able to pry it apart fairly easy. The buttons are all one piece of rubber under the bezel.

I would recommend removing it and painting it black with duplicolor.

You can see the 2 tabs in this pic

By the way, there is no need to actually separate the module like this picture shows. Just separate the bezel from the module.

As a side note, I am setting up to provide this service, and am currently working on Vendor status. Site is www.vettemods.com.

Message me if you have other questions.

Just how did you get the vette visor to split open ? And how will you re-seal it ?

You have to cut the stitching to open it up. A seam ripper works real well for doing it. Afterwards, have an upholstery shop re-sew it back together.
I did mine a couple of months ago....worked out good. But a word of caution: Make sure you test the Homelink before tearing anything apart. The first unit I bought on eBay didn't work. (But that's ok....the seller was selling a pair of visors, one of which just happened to have a Homelink transmitter.) I used an old PC power supply to power it for testing.

Here's another link on how to:

http://www.digitalcorvettes.com/foru...light=homelink

The cover just snaps off. There are two arrow shaped tines on either side.

I did this mod and love it. If anyone is contemplating this and you have the kind of garage door openers which are "rolling code" be sure you get a homelink newer than 1998. Earlier versions won't work.

I went ahead and placed an order with Vettemods today and my black GM visor with Homelink is being shipped Monday. I tried bidding on a couple of these things on eBay and always got torpedoed at the end by someone who wanted it more. My wife can't sew for $#^@ and neither can I, and I decided that it was worth it to just buy the thing ready to go rather than spend my valuable time messing with it, finding a seamstress to sew it back up, etc.

Anyway, I liked being able to pay via PayPal and Rick was very responsive to my e-mails and offered me a full refund if I'm not happy with the visor or I can't get my gate to open with it. So for me, it's money well spent. I opted for a whole new visor because one of the PO's put a small cigarette burn in my original one and whenever I sell this thing, I'll probably just put the old one back on and sell the Homelink visor separately.

I'll let you guys know how it works out. Rick is shipping Monday. We're both in CA so I should have it on Tuesday. Can't wait.
