I've already posted this on the C5 Tech and C5 General sections...but for you Z06ers...after a thorough oil/filter change have you found that you need 6.5 or 7 qts to reach the fill line on your dipstick??
It seems that a lot of '01 coupe and vert owners are saying that 7 qts does the trick. I just did my first oil change (got it completely drained...jacked up the rear end) and 6.5 qts is giving me a reading of a half qt low. Is the LS6 requiring 7 qts of Mobil One too?
JazyJeff have you had your oil/filter changed? If so, how many quarts did it take to bring it to the full line? Thanks
Below is quoted from a flyer talking about the '01 Z06 (bet GM messed this up)
"NEW OIL LEVEL INDICATOR
Due to the slightly different shape of the exhaust manifolds, the LS6 needs a longer oil-level (or dipstick) tube to the crankcase. The tube is bent further away from the engine block. With the new tube comes a new dipstick, or oil-level indicator."
I've changed it twice now and it's required 7 qts to read full. The owners manual says 6.1 liters.I think thats 6.5 qts.
I hadn't heard about the "NEW" dipstick & tube yet though.
av8or3, yes, one the 2001 improvements for the Z06 (and coupe, vert) was a different dipstick and longer dipstick configuration (supposedly to clear the redesigned headers)...which in my opinion may account for that "extra" half qt of oil needed to reach the full line. It's either a real blunder on the part of the dipstick manufacturer and who knows it may have something to do with the oil consumption issue for the '01s.
My Z has had only one oil change so far, during which it did require 7 quarts to reach the fill mark on the dipstick. This really irritates me, because I hate overfilling my engine with oil. From what I understand, the LS1/LS6 engines have a capacity of 6.5 quarts and that is all the oil it should get. Overfilling can be harmfull, although I doubt a half quart of Mobil 1 is going to be a big deal. In any case, it seems that there is something wrong with the dipstick.
Does anyone know the real story here? Is the dipstick wrong or does the LS6 actually have a 7 qt oil capacity? Do '02s have the same problem? Unless I get information to the contrary, I am having it filled with only 6.5 qts next time regardless of what the dipstick says.
ADE 1000, I don't know if this is any consolation, but SHOCK WAVE posted this in the C5 Tech Section...........
"At a seminar at the C5 Birthday Bash, we were told by GM engineers that you could put 7 quarts without any fear of foaming, the main problem caused by overfilling. The manual also states that under heavy duty operations 7 quarts is recomended. I put 7 quarts in mine..."
What we really need is for Dave Hill to say that 7 qts. is fine. I've already entered a request for that in the Ask Dave Hill section. The more forum members that submit the same question for Dave Hill will increase its chances of being passed to Dave Hill.
Jeff...roger that...all I can tell you was that I was skeptical of the posters saying that it requires 7 qts to satisfy a dipstick reading of full/maxuntil this past weekend. I put in 6.5 qts and the dipstick reads a half qt low.
I take 7 minimum I wonder if the other 1/4 qt. I need could be because of my LPE alum. radiator that has a built in cooler, need to get off my lazy....... call and find out the recomend 6.5 and the turbos hold a few drops as well so I run with 7 10-30 M-1.
Oh by the way on his hi output motors he uses a 01' stick and a 00 tube so it is a tad more legible and hopefully more accurate.Good Luck Dave s.

Good idea. I will also submit the question to Dave Hill. I am surprised that this is not that big of an issue among Z06 owners.
