Is this a scam?......Advice Please
I have a buyer for my C5 who lives in Fla and I'm in NC. She (according to the name) saw the post on the Forum and registered on the Forum, emailed me, then canceled her membership. Her email had a return email posted. I have a clear title and she is financing through a bank. She first requested the VIN which I gave her. Now she is telling me her bank requires the title before they will issue her the check. She said her bank will call me to verify they are a valid financial institution. She also, said she will send me a good faith check to show she is serious about the car. She has not seen the car other than the pictures. She did give me her address which is a valid address in her name according to the on line county records. A long distant sale is new to me. Does this sound legit?

DO NOT SEND THE TITLE! This will be an open title, and you do not want that...Be firm!
If the title is free and clear that is all the insitution needs besides your name, address, VIN # and mileage of the vehicle.

I bought my corvette last month, also had to go through my bank. What I needed from the seller: 1) A purchase agreement, stated he,the seller agrees to sell me, the buyer a _______what have you 2) VIN #, and they do a lien search on it.
Then its all trust after that, sending money, receiving the car and what not.
Id wait to get more info from her to find out if its legit or not. Goodluck

I went through this with a seller who was with me when we went to my bank. He still had a payoff on the car with his CU.
What you can do is go to your bank with the title. Her bank can contact yours to make sure they have title and can wire the money to your account. Your bank then sends them the title.
It is a catch 22. Her bank don't want to let go of the money without the title and you or your bank don't want to let go of the title without the money. Most likely your bank will fax a copy to her bank to show they have the title. The money is wired and the original is then sent.
This could be on the up and up. By doing it through the banks everone protects themselves and your sell goes through.

Thanks guys......This person seems to check out....but it is possible they have used a legit persons ID. She has not provided me a phone number for her but, I have obtained it though other resources. I will call her tomorrow to verify the person at this phone number is the one that has initiated this buy. I have no intention of letting the title or the car go until their check has cleared my bank or a wire transfer. If it is legit, I'm sure we can work it out. Thanks for the info. I will be talking to my bank in the morning.

Go with your gut. If you have any reservations, hold off and sell it locally. No freakin way they should have the title before they cut a check. They can call your bank to check for leins! Be very careful!

I am currently working to finance my first C5 Z06 through my CU (which I have purchased quite a few cars through), and they pretty much demanded the same thing. I think it's become harder to purchase vehicles in the past few years, and the amount of paperwork was absolutely horrific. They essentially wanted Power of Attorney over the car before they would cut a check.
The guy selling me the car was rightfully nervous, and I decided it would be easier to just raise the cash myself (had just sold another car, so had a bit sitting around) than to go through all the paperwork hassle. I'm buying the car myself but then signing over the title directly to my CU, and then they will buy it from me and allow me to finance it normally. Pretty strange damn way to buy a car (for me anyway), but the point is that her financial institution may very well be legit with their requests. I think it means that banks only want you to buy cars from stealerships, which is a damn shame!

Do not send her or her bank the title. It's not required. Maybe this person is OK, but, I wouldn't trust her. Why woan't she give you her phone number? Something doesn't sound right here. Good luck...

I bought my ZR-1 out of state some years back and my credit union accepted a fax copy of the title. Issued a check in the sellers name and I got the title when I picked up the vette.

She did not give you a phone #, she requested your title, and her bank will call you to assure you they are real.
Are you kidding me?
This has scam written all over it.
Be very careful,
Bob K.
BTW, I'm going to call you today to let you know I'm the tooth fairy, does that prove anything?

I agree with the others that think this is a scam.
I have financed several vehicles with my CU throughout the years and have never been required to get a title first.
Now I am just waiting to hear... "the rest, of the story"

Sounds a bit shady,, If she does send u $$ make sure it clears the bank wait about 10 days before you do further transactions. What happens sometimes is that they send you a check it goes through the bank and a few days later it gets rejected. Mean while you gave them your car. Best thing to do is a face to face. To me if you are buying a car of that amount you want to see the seller.. Be careful !!!!!!!!
