4K would be a great price to repaint but give you a finished product far below a factory paint job. Unfortunately if you're going to change colors completely, disassemble and reassemble as required you are going to pay 1.5 to 2 times that for quality work greater or at least equal to that of a factory job.
I had mine repainted after an accident. The insurance co paid for the drivers side and it cost me $2300 for the rest. I was told if they hadn't had it disassembled it would have been a $10k paint job. That painting the same color too.

YIKES!!!!! I think if I were contemplating a new color, I would just buy a different car!!! Man, that's steep!!!
my .02 , never a big fan of changing colors .
If you like a different color , sell yours and buy one with the color you like . if you apply the paint cost to the trade , you would get an original car with the color you want
I just went to a restoration shop by my house they said it would cost me $5,000. to paint my car black again. They said they were a little higher than and average shop. But i saw there work and it looked great.I think it's the old saying you get what you pay for.

WOW---you guys paid alot for paint jobs. My husband changed his color from gold to radar blue and it only cost us $3K. You have seen the picture (maybe) he is 84-radarblue and it is on my link to my photo bucket..
Check it out here---it is obviously not the silver or yellow and we had this painted 4 years ago or sooo..

To do it right and get a high quality paint job I could see upwards of $10K being the price. Lots of work involved disassembling and then reassembling the panels.
What you are going to find is body shops will vary greatly in price. Having restored 55 and 57 chevy's there is alot of price variation. If you go to a car show and there is a body shop in a metro area advertising he is going to be big bucks. But if do some searching for a one two man shop and can see some of his previous work you can save alot of money . I was quoted $3000.00 to reeshoot mine black again.
A lot depends on not just the quality of the paint job, but how "detailed" you want the repaint to be. When changing colors, look at all the places that are body color that aren't easy to get too. Open the hood and you'll notice the hood framing is body color. Are you gonna pay to remove the hood to paint the framing, and are they going to remove the insulation and paint the entire interior, or just mask it off?? Are you gonna have them do the interior door sills and will they mask around parts like the door latch or remove them to paint properly? Most of the cost of a paint job is labor. The paint itself is a fraction of the final price. Your price will be very dependant on how much work you want the paint shop to put into this. Based on labor rates in my area, most full car repaints (same color) run about $10k. There used to be a chain of shops here in California called "Earl Scheib" that advertised a full repaint for $49.95 ..... you got what you paid for ....
damnn... guess i might not be gettin it repaint then to dsom :/ even though i think it would look nice... guess ill save up for a newer vette or something sadly got into and accident in my camaro today due to rain thanks to smart people slamming on brakes in huge puddles of water
