Locked out of my black beauty
After attending a movie and letting my top down I could not get the ignition key to turn and after a few minutes of jiggling the key I called Roadside assistance and was towed. The dealer said column lock and it was a fluke. it took 2 days to get fixed . now I am nervous now about it happening again. It took more than 5 hours to get tow truckon scene, Anyone heard of this??

First off people need to FILL OUT their PROFILE!!!!!!!!
We don't know if it's a late model, automatic or manual. I'd be very worried if he had this problem on a late model C5. Since I think since 2002 the lock plate was suppose to have been removed at the factory.

The column lock is not a fluke - happens quite often according to the posts here on the forum. Best bet is to get a column lock bypass kit from one of the forum vendors (got mine from Thunder Racing) and install it. The install is easy to do - no special tools requried other than screwdriver and torx bits. Takes about 30-45 minutes if you take your time.

The dealer lied, the 04 automatic doesn't have a column lock. If the key wouldn't turn, the problem must be with the key or the ignition cylinder.

Might also be worth mentioning - there is a set of interlock switches to prevent an automatic from starting unless your foot is on the brake, and to prevent the shift selector from being moved out of park if your foot isn't on the brake. Could be a bad switch.

Al,
Are you saying that the key would not turn toward the cranking position?
As a previous poster stated there was never a column lock in your 2004automatic.
I know there is an interlock between the trunk lid and the hard cover over the convertible top. (if your trunk is open the hard cover switch will not operate until you close the trunk)
Is it possible that there is also an interlock switch that prevents the ignition switch from being turned if the hard cover is not closed properly? Not likely but just a thought. You might want to check that out by releasing the hard cover then trying to start your car.
If the stealership billed you for column lock I would definitely check into it further.
