Default LS6 vs LS1 blocks

Is there any quick and easy external ways to tell the LS6 block from the LS1 block?
Any I.D. markings or numbers?

There's an identification barcode sticker on the left hand side of the block near the engine mounts. It gives you a code number that will tell you what engine is in your Z06. Your GM dealer parts dept. can tell you the codes for the C5 and LS6. I also think the C5 Registry offers the codes. I believe I saw them there.

How would you read a bar code and both LS1 & LS6 use the same casting numbers so that won't work.
Did I mention quick and easy. Thanks anyway. I'm begining to think that there is no way to tell the difference.

Not to sound stupid but I thought the LS1 and LS6 block were the same thing. The only difference about the engines were the heads?

For the 2001 Model Year (MY) there were two different blocks for the LS1 and LS6, I believe starting with the 2002 MY the same block (Z06 cast windows) was used for both engines. The earlier LS1 block had drilled ports, the Z06 block had cast windows in the bulkheads for better bay-to-bay breathing.

I posted this on another forum to your question.

Externally, there is a difference between the color of the LS1 versus the LS6 blocks. The LS6 block has a darker grey appearance and looks less finished than the LS1 block. Other than that you will need to look internally to find the differences. Internally the LS6 has ports down by the mains that allow pressure to distribute equally between the bottom of the block. The LS1 block does not have these ports.

they windowed the block a bit I think to allow for higher revs w/out built up pressures. I seem to recall this in the vhs video that came with my C5 z06. I might be using the wrong terms, but the block is different from what I can remember unless they made it a running change into all LS type blocks after 01

EDIT***
found this

http://216.25.99.66/LS1LS6/lscastingnumbers.html
seems as if it was a running change in the LS1 block for the LS6 version. So the casting seems to be the same ie same block but not sure if there are internal differences. Would suspect no, but I don't know enough to keep myself out of trouble with the wife, so I won't go on record here saying either way. :O

That casting sheet backs up what I said in post #6 above ... the blocks were differeent in 2001 MY, the same after that.

also, what's interesting is they used the windowing in some of the iron blocks as well

Correct, thank you. I have found that there is a notch in front of the passenger side head that denotes the later block which is the LS6 block used in all of the later applications. This is what I was looking for.
(external proof) Thanks everyone.
