Thanks to help from Ct Corvette (Steve) I was able to install a drawtite Class I hitch and tow my friends (borrowed) 2007 Cobalt blue HD Softtail and his 2005 Suzuki Marauder (custom paint).
Total weight with all gear, bikes, trailer, etc was 5680lbs. Trailer had 1680 lbs on its axle. Averaged ~20.7mpg @77mph all the way down (1150 mi) with tires at OEM 32psi. Got 23+ mpg back with tires inflated to ~47psi. Made the trip 17.5 hrs from CT to Deltona Florida with all traffic and stops included. Same time for return trip too.
412rwhp/394tq made acceleration up onramps and in traffic a fun event!
I didnt think it was possible until I saw a viper pulling a chopper on a trailer one day. What is the tongue weight on the trailer?
Not sure what the tougue weight was....the vette and Class I hitch were rated at 200lbs...and i think we were right around that since most of the weight was centered over the rear axle. I wouldn't suggest towing this much weight without the Z51 suspension. The stronger spring and swaybar (04 Z06 on mine actually) made trailering a breeze. I could see it getting scary with a softer suspension over big bumps.
Your a lucky man, making that long of a trip. Don't ask me how I know this but, I truely found out the hard way. You dont put $20,000 worth of bikes on a $300 trailer.... and go very far....
Well, I used my buddies trailer...it has a 3500lb axle, full size tires, and bearing buddies which we kept filled with grease. I'm sure anything with tiny tires or without bearing buddies would have died somehwere along the way.
1150 mi each way, no issues to speak of. However, I keep my car in good mechanical condition and also recently put a lot of new parts in it like clutch, heads, cam, etc.
I'll probably do it in my truck next year though....much larger/smoother ride.
Bill, I'm glad to see that you made it to Daytona and back safely! By the looks of the pictures you guys had a blast . Will you be leaving the hitch on or taking it off??
Steve, you need to go for the trip next time, well worth it! I have some more pics of the "fun" that I'll post...I think they're still safe to post on here.
Konrad, the hitch is actually pretty well designed and not very noticible from the outside unless you're low and to the rear of the car....I'm thinking of keeping it on there because it was somewhat of a PITA to install.
