My '03 has competion grey wheels. The wheel weights are hammered on. Is this stock/normal? I'm due for new tires soon, and I'm sure the wheels are going to be scratched.

Yes, the stock wheel weights are clip on style to the edge of the rim. Just make sure to tell the guy changing the tires to be extra careful removing them. Have tape on weights put on in the 2-plane balancing method. Did that to my stock wheels and it's smooth upto 160 mph.
Just had a new rim fitted on mine and they used the stick on weights inside the rim. The other 3 wheels still have the hammer on style, but I am loath to change them as there is a risk of scratching the rims.

i did the same thing. rock stable at high track speeds.
my guys at Discount Tire popped them off w/o scratching the wheel. I then used Goof-Off spray to clean off the glue and gunk residue left behind after the weights were pulled, and they looked great.
really ticked me off that GM used visible wheel weights on this car

Do yourself a favor and remove the weights yourself at home the day you are going to take it in. Nobody is going to be as careful as you. Who cares if your wheels are not balanced for the drive to change the tires !
The tire guy wanted to use tape weights and I said just to use the hammer on ones as Ive had sticky ones come off (very rare but I've had it happen and just to be fair I've also had the hammer ones fly off too). I doesn't bother me in the least that they don't look that great.

Years ago, the adhesives used on stick on weights was not so good, and they would fly off. Now, the adhesives are so much better that if the surface is cleaned before they are applied, I have never had one come off.
When I get new tires, I usually take the opportunity to take the wheels off and clean them good. The tire place tends to be more careful if they are working with clean wheels instead of wheels covered with dirt and brake dust. I also keep an eye on them.
I usually take the wheels off two at a time, clean them up, and take them to get new tires. Put those back on, and take the other two. I have a spare front and rear wheel with tires mounted, so that makes the swap a little easier.
