Default Fob Question

I have a 98 Passave FOB with Key. GM 10253839
Is the Key of any value in the sale of this unit or is it specific to a car.

No, the fob can be programmed to work with any 97-2000.

Yes - but will the key be good for all cars. I know the FOB can be programed.

Hmmmmm someone will chime in... As I recall you have to get it programmed at the dealership for the "key" to work in the ignition...in order to actually start the car...

Is it a key blank with a chip or just a key blank and no chip?

the pellet on the key has a designated resistance value and i believe there are a total of 16 different values.

the key would have a 1 in 16 chance of working with another car if it was cut for that car.

Exactly. If the key has already been cut, it is worthless for the most part to anyone else.

The FOB will work on any 97-99 after programming. Let me know if you need instructions for programming. The chip in the key has 1 of 16 different levels of resistance which can be measured if you have a digital ohm meter. If the key has been cut, it is, for the most part, usless to anyone else. If it's still a blank its worth about $10 if you can find the chips resistance. streekeys.com sells keys with chip programmed for $10 so it's probably not worth your trouble.

Battery could be bad or it justs needs to be "re-learned" If you have previously programmed that FOB to that car, you can "re-learn" it by hiolding the lock and unlock buttons down at the same time for a few seconds until you hear the horn chirp. You should be successful from that. If it doesn't chirp, you may need to re-learn it to the car... more indepth process for this... It's all over the tech section.. do a search if this doesn't do it.. with a new battery.

Thank you. That answers the question about the key. Thats what I thought but just wanted to be sure. I will not include the key in the sale.

Here are the VATS values

The resistance of the key matches the programmed setting for your car. The BCM senses the resistance and if it's within 10%, the car starts.

The resistor codes are:
Key number Value (Ohms)
1 392
2 523
3 681
4 887
5 1130
6 1470
7 1870
8 2370
9 3010
10 3740
11 4750
12 6040
13 7500
14 9530
15 11800

Rather than measure it the dealer can check the value based on your VIN.
