I just ran Pocono north this past sat/sun. There was a beautiful red ZR-1. Straight from the owners mouth " this car is a heavy pig". top speed might be higher, but it is not quicker, not accelerating, braking, and cannot handle corner g's as good as a C5 Z06, and gas mileage is better. And the C6Z06 out performers the C5 Z06, and so on so forth. I'm thankful that every newer generation beats the older.

I was looking at a Comp yellow 95 ZR1 before I got my Z06.Man I still want that car.The owner had it so clean you could eat off the intake.Looking back I should have got it.Its real rare to see a Comp yellow ZR1 running around the streets.

I've got both and agree the ZR-1 feels like a wide pig, you can hear the frame flex, but it's still super stable, high skid pad, and numbers are there to prove it's worthiness..even at 405 ponies. A little more expensive to mod, but Marc Haibek is still in biz, and LPE still works on LT5s. Tough to break those GSC tires loose, plus semi active suspension. C4 ZR-1 is like my C6 Z06..wide and feels big but godamn she corners! Gotta admit like my 01 Z06..she has raw handling and power...no cats or muffs..fun as fu** too!

Im reading your post and even though its months old ,I guess ill respond anyway. After owning my 01 Z for a long while now i cabn say its the best performance car Ive EVER owned!! Still looks great, still turns heads, easy/cheap to maintain as well as mod, and super easy to get great performance gains for meager sums. The ZR1 on the other hand is a great car in its own right, but the average DIYer isnt capable of doing much maintainance on his/her own, as well as its difficult to find dealers that will work on them. Replacement parts are getting scarce as well.

Old topic, but , whatever.... I'd love to be able to keep multiple Corvettes, and a C4 ZR-1 would be about my fourth choice. The problem as I see it, is I'd be forced to keep the car stock, and if I were crazy enough to mod a ZR-1, it'd be alot more difficult to DIY than the much simpler LS motor. What other performance motor in the world (NA) is lighter, capable of 500and over RWHP, but still can get 27-30MPG. All that, and a shade tree mechanic, such as myself, can do the engine work. The general public doesn't know what a great motor this is, because the car rags can only bitch about the seats.

How can you even compare theses cars?
Sorry if you have an 01 instead of an 02 Z06, you got suckered by Chevy. As far as the performance between a stock c4 ZR1 and my 02 Z06, I wont blow your doors off but I will walk away from you. But 0-60 you will only be looking at my rear end. Yes the top end of your boat is 180 but who hits that.

20hp when most of this is from a measly .030" bump in cam lift?
My 01z would mop the floor with your 02, newb.

After that the 02 to 04 were the fastest.
Then the C/6 Z & ZR1 & so on and so on.
All being factory stock

And for the record, I had both an '01 Z06 and an '03 Z06 and they both ran pretty consistent 12.4 @116 mph stock in similar temps/conditions. So much for the 20 hp.

zeevette most guys port the intakes and injector housings on the ZR-1, add headers/Haibeck tune. 400ish to the tire +- on stock cams/heads is avg Mileage unaffected;some gear them some dont but plenty running bottom 12s/high 11s in that configuration they last pretty much forever cant kill those LT5s.

We recently bought our very first Corvette, a 91 ZR-1 with a few Haibeck upgrades (4:10 gears, updated injectors, Corsa exhaust, performance chip and powder coated engine.) Have had a buch of musclecars thru the years, but I must say this is the first car that's ever felt like a raw and no-nonsense sports car. It was America's only supercar at the time too. The power curve is just brutal (of course enhanced by the 4:10's), and the sound and feel of a beast is very present. I say a C4 ZR-1 is the most fun one can have with the clothes on
Here is what Marc Haibeck say about the 4:10 upgrade (for those who is interested):
Upgrading the rear axle gear ratio probably has the best benefit per dollar with respect to major upgrades. The 4.10 ratio is the most popular upgrade. 3.73 and 4.30 ratios are also available.
The principle benefits of a 4.10 ratio are:16% more torque to the wheels at all speeds
Sixth gear becomes a useful gear. The car can be maneuvered in traffic at 65 MPH without downshifting.
Has a broadening effect on the useful power band for the LT5. The throttle response is as good at 3000 rpm as it is at 4000 rpm with a 3.45 gear ratio.
Incredible throttle response in first and second gears
The car completes the quarter mile in fourth gear at about peak power, 6000 rpm for a 400 hp engine. 6400 rpm for a 500 hp engine.

Nice find. For a first Vet stepping into the most exotic one (for it's time) will be an experience . Welcome the the Corvette TAX in a large way.Next on your list should be a C5.

Here ya go
There is a difference between quicker and faster. The C4 ZR-1 has a 180mph top speed, which is higher than the Z06's top speed, which is 175mph (gear limited). This makes the ZR-1 faster in my book.
However, the Z06 runs the 1/4 in a less time, and probably gets to 150mph faster, so this makes it quicker in my book.
