Default Road Trip

Planning to take a drive down to Vegas and back at the end of the month. While I have done this several times in the past, never in a Vette.

So I was planning to avoid the boring interstates and seek out some more scenic and less traveled roads this time.

So if you have any suggestions on scenic routes from Portland Oregon to Vegas and back......I would appreciate the info.

Google Earth. Show the roads. Never tried it for planning but you can see where you're about to go.

IMO, it's the only way to travel in the Vette. However, I can't help you with routes from Portland to Vegas.

We have several friends with whom we road trip and our goal is to stay off the interstates as much as possible. We've found some great roads across the country and had some very enjoyable trips.

Enjoy yours!

Not much help here on the road planning, but hope you have a good trip - should be fun in the Vette.

I-84 to Hwy 97. 97 south to Klamath Falls. At KF take Hwy 39 to Tulelake, CA where the road becomes 139. Follow 139 all the way to Susanville. At Susanville take 395 to Reno. Reno to Fallon where you will join 95 south through Hawthorne & Tonopah. Stay on 95 all the way to Vegas. And watch for speed traps in & near the small towns between Tonopah & Las Vegas.

Thanks,

That was one of the routes I was looking at.........wondered about the "speed limits" in the rural areas

Also wondering if I can complete the trip before gas hits $5 for premium......but I doubt it

Premium here in the North part in Nevada is at 4.47 for Chevron 91. If you go to other stations it is about 4.37.

One change I would make here is to go Reno to Fernley Nevada 2nd Fernely exit and take 50 east to Fallon Then at Fallon take 95 all the way to Vegas, It will save you 20-30 mins. When ever you come to a small town besure to watch speed limits, They will get you, I travel this road a few times a year and most of the way you can do 75 and not worry, But you will be going 75 and then hit a 35mph zone fast...lol.

Hi Jim -

My best road trip buddy made us up this route from Portland down through Cali and on to vegas.....

Hwy 101, the Redwoods, Hwy 36 into Red Bluff, staying the night at the casino in South Lake Tahoe on the NV side at the border, then Sonora Pass (Hwy 108), Yosemite, and of course.... Death Valley!

Link to map of route....

See how that fits into your trip plans.

best regards -

You have some glorious options, but consider taking Hwy 1 along the coast south. We did that last fall from WA to Carmel, CA -- awsome ride in the Vette, incredible scenery, reasonable motels, too. Almost two years ago, drove from here to Tuscon via interstates and passed through Las Vegas -- a boring ride in a Ford Explorer through featureless terrain, but it was quick. Have a great time!
