Torque is rotational power whereas thrust is linear. As "C5SCCA" posted) thrust pushes the gases in one direction and the vehicle in the other.

Seriously..The best way to describe horse power & torque:
If you ever raced a 2 stroke dirt bike, that is horsepower &
low torque, so to speak. However, if you ever rode a Harley,
that is torque & low horse power, so to speak.

Just think of the UNITS torque is measured in, it's obviously a twisting force. for metric it's newton meters (a newton is a unit of force) in SI it's Ft Lbs or inch lbs but basically for torque you just take the force times the distance (or radius) to yield the "torque" since you can't change the distance it's just a measure of twisting force. Horsepower or ANY power is just a RATE of work done and work is just Energy per time one can see that you derive horsepower by considering the work done (force and distance) and the time it takes to do it... it's pretty easy highschool physics but considering what's more useful depends on the application as previously stated and people make a living on getting good HP and TQ curves out of performance parst as well as production engines so there is a lot that goes behind what you end up with, and a lot more than just PEAK numbers
I know I would rather drive a car that has more average hp/tq and pulls harder than a 15 yr old in the shower than a car that isn't streetable and has no ***** untill 5500 and makes crazy power at 7k rpm

OK you quys are speaking in somewhat advanced/thick terminology.
When we were kids:
Balsa wood airplane with the rubber band propeller = torque
Balsa wood airplane with *** .049 = H.P.
Thrust = the action of actual propulsion, for either plane.
Like this or ?

Which to me reads as you are measuring the torque in HP - a unit of power no twisting force.
If you only have the HP vs rpm curve of the engine and enough data on the car (transmission, gears, tire sizes, drag coefficients) then you can calculate the acceleration and top speed. Same applies to only having the torque vs rpm curve.
Read these 2 points;
Torque is not just a measurement of low end acceleration and HP is not just a measurement of top speed.
A torque number or a HP number by itself really means nothing. It's of no use except for possibly bench racing bragging rights.
But then, I might as well just beat a dead horse for all the difference stating these 2 points again will do....

You obviously need to go back to school then. If I said it was the same thing then I would of said torque and hp are measured the same way or torque and hp are the same thing. I never said torque was measured in hp or that they measure the same thing. I said hp is a measurement of torque which means you have to have torque to get hp.

torque and horsepower are not the same at any rpm or speed. they are two completely different measurements and the number value can cross as they change.
tq is a force
hp is a power.
horse power is NOT a measurement of torqe.

By definition they are numerically the same at 5252. It is mathematically impossible for them to cross at any other value.
