Last weekend I spent a few hours under the Vettte changing the starter.
Hell, these cars even look good from that angle!
The other day a guy asked me if it was a new one,I said no,it's a '98
Then he said "So what're those stubby looking ones with the headlights"?
"Those are the new ones" I said.
"I like these better"he said.
I commented on this earlier, but I must say that the C5 has the appeal that it has because GM took the better part of 10 years designing it.
A lot of heart, soul, blood and tears went into it. Heck they had to redesign the factory to build it
The C6 is an awesome car, no doubt about that. But, other than the headlights, the HP bump and the sharper lines, it is essentially an upgraded C5. Same basic design, just more refined.
I recall the refinements of the C5 over the C4 were just as much a turn-off to the Corvette community as the C6 seems to be now. The chief complaint was that it was too refined, drove like a Cadillac (sound familiar).
I think all generations of Corvette are great. Your opinion is always going to be slanted to which generation you have vs the generation you don't have, unless you are blessed enough to have a C5 and a C6.
Yep, no doubt about it.. the C5 is looking dated, pedantic and anemic to the public...
The only things i really liked in the C6 was the Zo6 i guess i liked the flared fenders and the more aggressive look it had over the normal C6 did nothing for me. But i really liked the C5 still just to me i thought it needed a bit more aggresion. So i added a couple things. L5 Fender flares. ACi side skirts, MSI spoiler, DRM hood and now i have a ACp front splitter for it and i really love how it looks now i'll never get rid of it.
And well with Tigershark out there also if you think you need to change the look of your vette you can go with them.

.
ten years ???????? We started in clay in Mid year 1993 on the C5 concept and in 1995 started real world beta testing the C5 platform. This car came from a clean sheet of paper in 1993 to a beta car in 1995 and then from initial design to launch, it took less than 4 years.
Does anyone remember the program that was on TV that showed the designing and unveiling of the C5? I recall seeing a re-run on this in ~2004. I would really like to see it again.
Whenever I see a 97-99 with wagon wheels still on it, I must admit it looks a bit dated to me, but a simple wheel change will solve that problem, because a C5 with just about any other wheel design on it does not look dated in any way. Like others have said, I also get people asking me all the time if my car is brand new and they are shocked when I tell them it's a 98!

I love my C5 and consider it a masterpiece. I dont care for the C6 and its short stumpy look. The long graceful lines of the C5 were replaced with a stunted Lambo look is the best way to describe it. The rear end of a C6 looked like some one took a band saw to it. There is almost no angle on that car that looks good to me.
That said I love the early Vettes, the Stingrays, 63 -67 and the C5. Not much of the other models including the current one. I can only dream about how good the ZR-1 would look built on a C5 chassis.

Funny what you say about the rear end of the C6. The one thing I did not like about my C5 was the rear end (and the rear end was panned by most when the C5 first came out). The C6's rear end uses the cupped look of the late 1960's c3's and is made to look smaller than the C5 using the lower hydrofoil looking piece.
Only thing I have seen that comes close to the C5 overall is this car and it's a combination of C1 & C5. Everything inside and underneath is
C5 i believe. C5 is still the best.
Designer Imagines A Corvette That Looks More Like a Corvette Than the Corvette
Slideshow: A Jaguar designer's personal project imagines what a modern front-engined Corvette might look like if Chevrolet revisited the golden age of the Stingray.
