Modern radio C5 replacement?

Woe unto you. Your wallet is your limit.
The HU plays my ipod and has BlueTooth for cell phone applications. I decided not to use a DD for nav; I prefer a portable Nav on the dash; I don't like the idea of looking into the cabin and taking my eyes completely out of the 'up' position to see the GPS screen.
I started out with a DD Pioneer head unit, intending later to add front speakers only and maybe a powered sub as funds allowed. After hearing different front speakers at the store I knew $800-1000 wouldn't be enough for the speakers/sub. The speakers in the $200-250 'sale' range just didn't do it for me. In the end I ended up with component speakers in the fronts, and 5x200 amp and a 10" sub.
In the end, the system handles some of the toughest music pieces I've got or ever heard of, with high and mid-range clarity and *very* tight bass. Bass was the tough feature. My home system has spoiled me; as an example, I've got a monstrous sub powered by a McIntosh 400w amp. It's spoiled me to good tunes and ruefully, I had to at least approximate the bass response. I'm not into that "rock concert bass" boominess.
My wallet wept... and I don't have nearly the money some folks put into their systems, by even half.
Nooooo.... don't go in there... stay with Blose. It'll be cheaper.

my 97 came with a kenwood in it and I hate it because it does not use buttons to select preset channels, instead you turn a **** to find a channel and then push a button to select it, hard to do safely when driving.

His name is Mike Stanzel and he is a forum member on here. He also made the adapter plates for the door speakers. The prices were fair and he shipped very quickly. Great experience.

Here is another peak at it before install... it is all aluminum:

And here's another cheap opinion to toss into the mix.
I hate new radios. Double din screens are crap. I actually LIKE the easy interface of the factory units and the lack of extra light blinding you when you drive at night.
I've seen ALL the double dins. Unless I was intending to watch a movie on a screen smaller than even a tablet, I have no use for them. Nav? That is the domain of the smart phone.
So what does someone like me whose factory unit dies and who wants to step up to something with USB capability buy?
Kenwood KIV-BT901
1 key button to control it all, positioned directly in line with the shifter
Blue Tooth hands-free connection for the phone - for when you are on call and they need to talk to you "now."
Excellent audio filtration and positioning.
Can be fully dimmed out or turned off at night AND the radio is smart enough that it stores memory for each and every mode separately. Radio by day vs night. Vs aux input, etc. (This made me happy)
USB - with support for many formats.
Aux - play any 3-way 2.5 mm jack feed
iPhone - don't have one, but if I did it could post video to the screen... which I will never do either way.
All in all, it is a compact, modern head unit which is easy to use and offers the driver a slew of options. If I ever feel the need for forward or reverse cameras, I can dump the feed to the screen to get geeky.
I was anxious when I started looking around to replace the factory unit because SOOOO many options, to me, are just crap. But I ended up very happy.
Also of note was the recommendation from the forum to use a custom faceplate company from Canada. It pains me that I forget the name, though I know others can chime in. But I was able to send them my faceplate model # and dimensions and they fabbed a metal faced unit which fit PERFECTLY. Now the aftermarket head unit fits and sits like a factory piece almost flush with the faceplate.
Speakers? Factory Bose 8", JL Audio C2 350x and 650x.
Not a thumper with the base (but that's the last thing I'm after) but now a lot more mid range... I can't speak to the upper range so well... ears damaged from a race car when I was younger.

I'll give a shout out to DD mods-- it's expensive, and you need to buy a new dash centerpiece from them, but it looks great (like it came from the factory), the dash centerpiece is exteremly well made (and comes in leather), and denise is awesome to work with.

"DIN" is a standards setting organization in Germany -- it stands for "Deutsches Institut für Normung".
a "DIN" radio opening is an opening that adheres to standard dimensions agreed to by DIN members (there are other standards that are used, such as ISO).
Most entry level-mid level are "single-din" dimensions. A single-DIN opening is 7.2 inches wide and 2.11 inches in height.
"Double DIN" just refers to a head unit that is two-times the height of a standard din (same width)... most touch screen/nav head units are double dins (see the pictures DD posted on the first page of this thread--- those are double din head units).
That work for 'ya?

Radio mounting kit.
Hello! I really like that mounting kit that says corvette on the bottom part. WAs that made, or was it purchased?
It really comes down to personal preference. Do you want it to play your Ipod (usually preferred)? Do you want it to have GPS in it, video screen, cell phone connectivity, etc... Really think about what you want and then look up reviews of the main brands that fit that description (Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine, JVC, etc)
I highly recommend replacing speakers too, adding an amp, and adding a sub. You have a killer car, why not compliment it with a killer stereo. I was driving around today with the radio blasting and it was just too cool of a feeling You can get a whole system for about $500 on up to $1600 for a killer one, or up even higher for superb brands you've probably never even heard of.

I like this plate...but I'm saving up for the Double-D mod...
Here's the link however and they are able to customize the lettering for you. If you go single-din make sure you get a bluetooth capable HU and a front facing USB port. just my .02. CD player is optional too.

This thread is 6 years old... that plate is a cheap filler plate... Hardly what would be considered a 2015 modernization.
Dennis at DD mods, selected this head unit for me. and I put it in on a Saturday morning. Touch Screen, Bluetooth, USB port, Hands free phone, texting, Voice assisted search and turn by turn Navigation, HD radio Sirius Radio, Pandora, Graphic Equalizer, DVD player, HD movies, and rear facing camera. This is a modern set up.
