Magnesuim Rim Wheel Weights/Questions
Anybody out there with OEM Magnesium Rims have any issue with wheel weights when buying new tires? What I'm specifically getting at is how do the existing stick on weights come off? Does this mar the rim at all when they remove them? Do the tire shops generally have stick-on weights for these rims?
Also, I hear these rims have some type of gaskets?? Can anyone educate me on these.
I think I'm going to change the tires....only 7K on them but they are 3/2004 on date code. Getting old....the tires that is!
Thanks in advance for any help!

Yes they need gaskets. Pry off the old weights and clean the glue off with with lacquer thinner, nail polish remover, Goo Gone, etc. Yes the tire shops use stick on weights. Make sure they don't put them on the outside surface, also so they clear the front calipers, it looks best if the weights are kept close close to the inbd side of the wheel. It still balances ok. They have to use a touchless tire mounting machine or the paint will chip.

DoubleG- These gaskets....do the tire places have them, can the originals be reused....or do I have to go to the dealership to get them?
Thanks!
Thanks!

They are a rubber donut shape that fits into a cutout in the center of the wheel. Yes you can reuse them. I believe dealer only. Use Gene (Caulie?spelling) a forum vender. Great to deal with. I believe the donut centers the wheel on the hub? But you must use it. Just sold my wheels, rubber ring, and nut covers.

The hardest part is making sure you get the tire store that is familiar with these wheels. They mar very easily. I had my old tires removed and then I removed the old weights and cleaned them.
Used goo-gone and fishing line to remove. Removed and replaced all 4 batteries in TMS and had them mount new tires.
All went well.

A long time ago a forum member mentioned that he ordered the rubber mounting rings for the magnesium wheels directly from Speedline. Cost was $5 each plush shipping. Might check with the dealer and see if they can get them.
