Default Ques on THEFTLOCK and electrochromic mirror

Hi -

Two unrelated newbie questions. Just purchased a 2004.

1. THEFTLOCK - An old thread mentions a red led light on the HU that indicates if activated. I don't see that on my 2004 C5 (single CD in unit, no rear CD changer) and the owner manual does not mention it. Rather than trying to program a new code, is there an easy way for me to determine if the previous owner set and activated a code?

2. I had the car in a normally excellent shop to repaint a few scratches. The paint job was their usual excellent quality, but their final detail person was careless. While driving home, noticed what I thought was a bit of water along the top edge of the driver side electrochromic mirror. Did not think much of it, assuming it was just water that would dry and require at most water spot removal. Whatever the substance was, it turned out leaving the mirror near the top a lighter shade than the rest of the mirror. I am thinking they used some solvent that that dripped onto and damaged the mirror surface. I could not find any specific mirror cautions, and was wondering if the susceptibility of the mirror to damage is fairly well known. I expect the shop will replace the mirror if required, but from what I was told by a dealer parts department, the glass alone is $426 retail, so it is a big deal. Just curious if any of you have experiences with this.

If they do replace it, just to make sure they use the correct part, I think all C5 have heated mirrors. Is that correct? Is the heating in the glass, or is there a heating element behind the glass? I think the electrochromatic mirror is an option, so do I need to be careful they do not substitute a non-electrochromatic mirror?

Thanks,

John

Hello John.
If you don't see a red light flashing on the radio it is then turned off, If you do a search you will find how to program it, Very easy to do, Just don't lose your code, It is a pain to get a new code.

Activating the Theft-Deterrent Feature
The instructions which follow explain how to enter
your secret code to activate the THEFTLOCK system.
It is recommended that you read through all nine steps
before starting the procedure.
If you allow more than 15 seconds to elapse between
any steps, the radio automatically reverts to time and
you must start the procedure over at Step 4.

1. Write down any three or four-digit number from
000 to 1999 and keep it in a safe place separate
from the vehicle.
2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON.
3. Turn the radio off.
4. Press the 1 and 4 pushbuttons at the same time.
Hold them down until --- shows on the display.
Next you will use the secret code number which
you have written down.
5. Press MN and 000 will appear on the display.
6. Press MN again to make the last two digits agree
with your code.
7. Press HR to make the first one or two digits agree
with your code.
8. Press AM FM after you have confirmed that the
code matches the secret code you have written down.
The display will show REP to let you know that you
need to repeat Steps 5 through 7 to confirm your
secret code.
9. Press AM FM and this time the display will show
SEC to let you know that your radio is secure.
Unlocking the Theft-Deterrent Feature
After a Power Loss
Enter your secret code as follows; pause no more than
15 seconds between steps:
1. Turn the ignition on. LOC will appear on the display.
2. Press MN and 000 will appear on the display.
3. Press MN again to make the last two digits agree
with your code.
4. Press HR to make the first one or two digits agree
with your code.
5. Press AM FM after you have confirmed that the
code matches the secret code you have written down.
The display will show SEC, indicating the radio is
now operable and secure.
If you enter the wrong code eight times, INOP will
appear on the display. You will have to wait an hour with
the ignition on before you can try again. When you try
again, you will only have three chances to enter the
correct code before INOP appears.
If you lose or forget your code, contact your dealer.
Disabling the Theft-Deterrent Feature
Enter your secret code as follows; pause no more than
15 seconds between steps:
1. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON.
2. Turn the radio off.
3. Press the 1 and 4 pushbuttons at the same time.
Hold them down until SEC shows on the display.
4. Press MN and 000 will appear on the display.
5. Press MN again to make the last two digits agree
with your code.
6. Press HR to make the first one or two digits agree
with your code.
7. Press AM FM after you have confirmed that the
code matches the secret code you have written down.
The display will show ---, indicating that the radio
is no longer secured.
If the code entered is incorrect, SEC will appear on the
display. The radio will remain secured until the correct
code is entered.
When battery power is removed and later applied to a
secured radio, the radio won’t turn on and LOC will
appear on the display.
To unlock a secured radio, see “Unlocking the
Theft-Deterrent Feature After a Power Loss” earlier
in this section.

The following procedure will give you a newcode that you can use instead of your personal code. Using this newcode, you can ?unlock? your radio and then ?re-lock? it with a newcode if you wish. Prerequisites: The radio must be in LOC mode NOT in INOP mode. Let me explain. If you have activated the Theft-Deterrent feature of your radio and loose power, the radio goes into LOC (theftlock) mode. With the ignition on, you must use the MN and HR buttons to enter you personal code in order to unlock it (The instructions are on page 3-27 in your Y2K Owner?s manual). If you fail to enter the correct code eight (8) times, the radio goes into INOP mode. You have to wait an hour with the ignition on before the radio returns to LOC mode (go for a long drive somewhere). Procedure:
01. Turn the ignition ON (The
radio displays LOC)
02. Hold down the
Radio Presets 2 and 3 buttons for six seconds
03. The
radio display changes from LOC to a three-digit number. Write this number down. Don?t take forever, fifteen seconds max before the next step.
04. Press the AM/FM button
05. The
radio display changes to another three-digit number. Write this number to the right of the first one.
06. You now have a six-digit number, the first three digits are from STEP 03 and the last three digits are form STEP 05
07. Call 1 800 537 5140
08. Press 1 then # (pound). You?ll hear ?Invalid
Code, try again?
09. Press 139010 then # (pound). You will be asked to enter your four or six digit
code followed by * (start)
10. Enter the number from STEP 6 then * (star)
11. Listen to the four-digit number and write it down. It will be repeated twice
12. Turn the ignition ON (The
radio displays LOC)
13. Use the MN and HR buttons to enter the
code from STEP 11
14. Press the AM/FM button. The
radio display changes to SEC Your radio is now ?un-locked? and usable. The Theft-Deterrent feature is STILL active! If you want to disable it, use the instruction on page 3-27 in your Y2K Owner?s manual. Use the code from STEP 11 instead of your personal code.

Thanks, Bill.

I had read those instructions. I just wanted to see if it had been activated, and you did answer that question. Interesting that owner manual did not mention, so I had thought that red light pertained to an earlier HU, pre-2004.

Quickest way is to disconnect the battery, wait a few minutes then plug it back in. If the radio turns into a useless lump then there was a security code.

I think if you follow the steps on page 3-87 to "Disabling" up to step 3 it will either display "SEC" or "---". The "---" would indicate that it is not enabled.

Heated yes. And I believe the electromatic mirrors were part of an option package.

Standard equipment on the C5's was the heated mirrors. Check with a GM parts place for part numbers

Tell us more about the car and post some pictures. Coup? Vert? Z? Manual or auto, etc.
On my 2002 when I have the Theftloc on the light isn't on when the engine is running, It only flashes when the key is off. Maybe it is different with different years.

Default question on heated mirrors

How do you turn on the heat if needed? I haven't located the switch for it. Thanks.

Thanks for the replies.

I uploaded a photo which is pending approval.

Car is a 2004 C5 Convertible, Torch Red, Sand color top and interior, 6 Speed Manual, 13,000 miles. It had been kept in a garage with a cover and is in excellent shape, except for a few scratches which I had fixed.

In the 2004 Manual on p 3-31:

Your vehicle has heated outside rearview mirrors.
The mirrors will heat to help clear fog or frost from the
surface of the mirrors when the rear window defog
button is pressed.

Default you guys are awesome

Thanks for letting me know on the heat issue. I know I took the easy way out, instead of going into the manual. Thanks again!
