I wonder if the guys that bought a COPO Camaro in 1969 were given the same treatment.

Sounds more like a 427 and not necessarilly a LS7. Good luck but more than likely its not going to be worth much more than a modded up 04Z with a 427 in it.

A 1969 COPO Camaro did not contain any parts that could not be purchased over the counter by the general public in 1969. No matter how much money you had, you could not purchase an LS7 in 2004.

Just a thought, does the car have a clear title or a bill of sale? Could be one of the prototype/race cars and was given to him as a gift?

I dont believe this at all. If there were 50 made, we would have heard about them by now.

I work for GM and have worked on several of their pilot programs. Early pilot builds with non-validated parts like an LS7 in a C5 would never be sold or given away.

Where is all the pictures, and/or paperwork or other helpful information?
Where ever this car is, someone should be around it that has a cell phone with a camera on it.

It didn't come direct from Chevy, but 427's were in 2003/04 models via Guldstrand and others...

Lets wait until we see pics and docs before we judge. Cooksey did many favors for his friends.

I would love to see some of the pictures in a few days. Also ask your son to get the pictures of the engine compartment from different angles and also the glove box door that has all the codes. You can see were the skepticism is coming from. You said that 50 of these race cars were built, yet no one has ever heard of them. I am not saying it did not happen, maybe it did, but documentation is what will clear it up and also what will be needed to get a true value. If there is no documentation, the car will not be worth any more than any other modded Corvette.

Well currently since I have nothing to add as far as proof, until my boys come back next week with the pic's.... It seems redundant in the yes-it-is no-its-not game.... i would like some speculation on the value of the car if in the case i am correct...and not to come down on me like im trying to pull something over on someone...

And yes, i have seen the car, the pictures, everything, it was given to joe from GM... I think it was back in the late 60's and early 70's that he raced... his knees went out from some of the wrecks, that is why they made him the Automatic.

so... help?

Maybe it's a Guldstrand Corvette. There were 50 examples of those made with 427 engines in 2003 Z06 chassis. I've been to Guldstrand Motorsports shop and they are nice guys who really know what they are doing. If it's a Guldstrand Corvette your son is getting then he is very lucky.

Paul. Don't worry about skeptics. You know it was gonna happen. It's hard to know everything about every model C5 let alone every generations different optioned cars. Just find out what you have. Let us know because it would be cool to know what car this really is. Then mostly just enjoy it.

Thanks for letting us know about it and I look forward to hearing back what you've got.

Just noticed Trigger Creep also posted about the Guldstrand vette a few minutes before me.

The VIN should also be revealing....pilot cars are all very low VINs, even the ones that are Engineering Evaluation vehicles that do get sold eventually. If he has a VIN it should have a lot of 0s in it.

I worked at Chrysler in Engineering for a long time. Saw many "mules" made up with high performance engines, but never knew of any available for sale to the employees or public. I asked many times to purchase one. Went all the way up the chain of command and never got anywhere.
My guess is that Chevrolet Engineering was the same way with any hopped up Corvettes they might of had.

Price is hard to set on a car like this. It is what ever someone is willing to pay for it. If in fact it is a true GM production race car 1 of 50 and the only one with an automatic, I would not try and get a price here. go to a person or company that appraise cars. I have seem cars sell at the two auctions mentioned for extremely high prices and some extremely low.
Prior to the ecomony going in the tank people were paying over one million dollars for a Hemi Cuda at Barrett/Jackson. I watched the Mecum one night and the mule that Zora had for testing with complete documentaion sold for just over three hundred thousand dollars. So go figure, one mill. for a Hemi Cuda (many produced) 300K for a documented mule Corvette that belonged to Zora.

That's what I was thinking. What color is the Corvette you are talking about? Maybe it's a Guldstrand 427 Corvette.

Ok... I have my son in front of me and he is telling me a bit more than I knew... but not much.... here it is... from my son to you..

its a C5 like my dads car, headlights go down... he is familiar with the body style as he drives his other grandpa's C5 here and there.... on the top shroud it says "427 510hp" and then below that is a metal plaque that says "To Joe Weiter from Chevrolet"

The reason they gave him the car is he blew his knees out in a race. again,,,, GIVEN, never purchased.

O, and its a red convertible.

Found him!! http://www.racingsportscars.com/drivers.html
