I'm sure you know this but if you get an auto C5 and you want to compare it to a 05 GTO - make sure the C5 has the optional 3.15 gears - the 2.73s will not be a good comparison to the GTO - the GTO will feel much stronger off the line.
I've owned the 05 GTO and I have a C5 with bolt ons and the 3.15 and it feels much stronger/better response then the stock auto 6.0 GT0. I've driven a C5 with the 2.73s and was not happy with the comparison. Pics of the GTO are in my album.
local gto here is an 05 with 30k miles for 14k, or a 99 c5 a4 with 62k miles for 12500.
That's a damn good price for the c5.
Here's something to consider........add 3 years and 30K miles to each one. It'd be safe to say that the vette will still hold most of its current value while the GTO will be worth about half of its current value. There's lots of c5's out there with 90-100K miles priced in the 12K range.
Another point is........with the GTO, you just have another average 'look like everything else' car that doesn't hold any kind of 'special' or 'higher' stature in the car realm.
A corvette however.............the name speaks for itself.

they both run about the same times stock. buddy of mine tells me with bolt ons and a shot 05 gtos are doing 10.90-11.10s. hows that stack up to the vette?
ahh decisions decisions
I have seen a stock 99 coupe with some weight reduction and gears run a 10.99 (Horsepowersales out of Pompano Beach Fl. runs this combo at the Gator Nationals) He runs the stock class. (stock heads/cam/intake).
Not that a GTO cant be made to be fast. It is just a bit more costly and tough. I would gladly take a lighter C5/FRC/Z06 over the GTO.
Funny my auto C5 has beaten manual C5 before.... So we need to not look at the times that GM says the car will do because they test them with professional drivers..... Although I do understand what your saying... Manual are normally faster on the start....
To answer the question at hand... Buy the GTO if you have finance it... It is newer less miles and they are fun cars... The C5 is amazing in every way... Unless your paying cash for the car the GTO will be cheaper in the long run...
For the one's who going to question my post it is a fact... A bank will finance the GTO at a cheaper interest rate than the C5... The C5 is 11 years old and it will qualify as a personal loan with a much higher interest rate...
By posting on a corvette site your going to get everyone telling you to by a corvette... It is like asking us which car a Mustang Cobra or a Corvette... No one on here will tell you to buy a Mustang over a corvette... The same will go for the GTO....
I think the C5 is a corvette that has a timeless design and beauty to it..The GTO is a bloated Cavalier with a nice interior/engine but styling is boring and leaves alot to be desired. Can't even compare the two..
I own both cars and you're comparing apples and oranges......a C5 was a $50K car new and a GTO was $20K less than that......apples and oranges man. I will say the GTO seats are FAR more comfortable and better quality than the C5 seats .....
I had an 06 GTO with the 6spd. I bought my 03 Vert and sold my GTO. Yes, they are to entirely different cars. Yes, they are both fast. But, the GTO is no Vette. The GTO was fast, but it was a heavy and did not handle like the Vette. I did not want to keep both of them so I sold the GTO with 3200 miles on it. I did like it, but it was no Vette.
well guys i just want to say thank you to all of you for your help on the subject. I have decided to go with the vette. I have always wanted one and its not my daily driver anyway. i am going to pick her up this week. its a 99 with 60k miles for 12500. is this a decent deal or should i keep looking. high miles on a car scare me.

heres a pic of her!
only problem is it has 2.73 gears
Its worth quite a bit more then that, your basically paying trade in value to a dealer, which is why someone else bought it super good deal.
So, that one got away -- keep looking. Craigslist is your friend, and keep a check in your wallet for a deposit.
This is Corvette Forum -- did you ask for replies to the same questions on the GTO forum? They won't have access to dealerships, and not much to choose from on the aftermarket compared to a Vette. Selection of the Vette or the "goat" boils down to your "needs." On CF, we've already made our choices. Good luck on whatever you decide.
