POLISHED Alternator & Bracket ~Pics
Almost done with the whole engine.... here's some iPhone pictures taken this weekend...
The alternator was taken apart by a local starter shop, after the parts were polished it was taken back for rebuilding/reassembly.

Some reflection

Outstanding job. So when can I send you mine for that same treatment?

Very cool! You've got my respect!
I think you have the right idea. I see all these other guys adding covers to everything that only serve to hold in heat, add weight and make cleaning difficult.
Your approach is spot on! Make it pretty on its own merits instead of disguising ugly with a cover.
I've often thought... there are 6 aluminum items very visable under the hood of a C5. What would an engine bay look like with all 6 polished, but everything else otherwise stock?
1) Alternator
2) Alternator bracket
3) Water pump
4) Idler pulley
5) Throttle body
6) Master Brake Cylinder

Some of the aftermarket covers (painted, polished, real carbon) do look good, but in moderation and with a theme to follow.

Some parts are a year in the making. The last time I drove this car was July 2009, although it's almost done.

I must admit that does look great. My only question is everything is nice and shinny now with the engine all apart. What happens once it is all back together and in the car. That aluminum will not look like that for long and you cannot get to it completely to keep it polished. Are you planning to have them clearcoated?

It was a pain mainly because of the power steering pump pulley in the way. I broke it off with a hammer because I knew I was adding a polished PS pulley later. The plastic pulley shattered like glass. It made getting to the bolts much eaiser. If you want, the black metal LS3 pulley is only $30, and has big openings in the face so you can get to the bolts better than the LS1/6 plastic unit.
These pictures of my last LS1 were taken exactly 1.5 years after the job was completed with maybe 3,000 miles. I never touched it other than light dusting with a microfiber towel once in a while. If you don't drive it in the rain it will last a long time.. the key is to get the parts done smoothly in the beginning.

Very nice! I would like to clean up the same parts as mentioned, however I'm leaning towards powder coating. I agree about having too many covers in the engine bay. I would much rather clean up the existing components and work from there.

Congrats,,,you have WAY more talent and PATIENCE than I!!! I would and maybe will try a few parts sometime in the foreseeable future!! I assume you disassembled the alternator to do that part!!
