Anyone else shift 1st to 3rd?
Because of the annoying shift skip from 1st to 4th, one day i decided to shift from 1st to 3rd. 2nd gear always seemed to low for me unless I was stepping on it, and 4th of course is way to high a gear from 1st. I noticed with a half pull down from 1st it springs loads to the right for a nice smooth shift to 3rd. The gear transition seems to be much smoother and still has plenty of torque. It's much less jerky than going into 2nd.
Bottom line: 1st to 3rd = smoother transition at normal RMP with less gas... and oh btw, eliminates any issues with the annoying skip shift to 4th if you haven't installed the skip shift eliminator yet...

There is a device that just plugs in to the trans that eliminates the CAGS feature altogether. It only takes a couple of minutes to install. Most vendors sell them for around $20-30 bucks. I used to have one installed. When my car was re-tuned it was eliminated from the computer. If anyone is interested in buying mine, $15 and I'll ship it. PM, please.

First thing I did to my 6-speed cars was to install the CAGS bypass. Once installed, I would say 99% of the time I went ahead and shifted 1-2-3-4 - really didn't skip second at all.

I also do the 1-3-5 and sometimes 1-3-6 now and even before I got the 4:10 rear. Here in Florida it's so flat that you don't need to use all the gears unless you are having some fun. I have the skip shift eliminator but just recently got a hand held tuner and tuned the CAGS out. I did not bother taking the skip shift eliminator off that I had installed. The hand held eliminated the skip shift light from coming on.

The CAGS was eliminated… it had to go. It just screwed me up too many times because I enjoy the 1-2-3-4 shift mostly in town. It has been a habit of mine to utilize the full gate through the gears... frequently enough so that it has become second nature.
Often when I'm alone on the road I've enjoyed experiencing a casual acceleration up to varying RPM ranges to enjoy the growl of the exhaust at different levels.
Intentionally skipping a shift requires thought… thinking about your gate pattern… and, to me; it interrupts the synchronized elevation of sound I enjoy from the exhaust when accelerating. Nothing sounds sweeter than the 1-2-3-4 shift.
Bottom line, for me: 1-2-3-4 in town plus 5-6 for a little sweet acceleration on the entrance ramp for the interstate. These vehicles get great gas mileage any way you look at it and… I enjoy a manual shift gearbox.

I have the CAGS bypass (2nd thing I changed after exhaust). I usually go 1st to 3rd while I warm-up the vette & leave it in 3rd (area where I live has 20 mph speed limit). Once I get out to the open road I very the shifting pattern as to how I feel & traffic & speed limits allow. Joys of having a 6 speed...

LOL that was fast. When I bought my car it had the CAGS elminator. I removed it and just disabled the "feature" when I re flashed my computer. Sometimes I do 1-3 but I love going through the low gears just to hear the rumble of the exhaust.

I have the bypass,,and still often skip gears,,mostly 1-3-5-6,,as often traffic makes 1-2-3-4 more or less wasted motion!! Sometimes its SO slow,,,I actually do the 1-4 shift myself!! I must admit that I find it MUCH more pleasing to be able to step on it a bit and use ALL the gears though!!!

CAGS does not give you the option to shift to third instead of fourth. Both second and third are locked out when CAGS engages. If you are able to shift from first to third CAGS has not engaged and you could have just as easily shifted into second.
So, simply put, shifting to third does not eliminate the force to fourth, you did that by bringing the RPMs to a level that causes CAGS to not engage.

What do you think CAGS does? It forces you to shift from first to fourth under certain circumstances. You said shifting to third eliminates that.
