Can Console Power Outlet Be Converted To Switched Power?
I have my Garmin Nuvi plugged into the console outlet.
If there is a relatively easy way (i.e., Electrical Engineering degree and complete dismantling of vehicle not required) to convert this connection from constant power to switched, I would like to do so.
Anyone done this?
Thanks in advance!

The easiest way that I can think of is to run a single power wire from a switched source in the fuse box and use that wire to replace the orange power wire that currently powers the power outlet in the console. Really simple, shouldn't take longer than an hour from start to finish. 25 min to remove console, 10 min to run and connect wire, 25 min to reinstall console. That is very very conservative, assuming that you have maybe never dismantled the console. Piece of cake. I honestlt think it can be done, start to finish, in 30 to 40 minutes. HTH

Depends on what you are really going for. If you want the power to go on and off with the key, do what they said. If you just want the outlet to be "switched", cut the existing orange wire, splice in a switch and mount it wherever you want. Not elegant, but 5-10 minutes and extremely simple.

Thanks for the input guys!
I am looking for on/off with the key so I'll run wire to the fuse box.
Now, all I need to do is figure out how to attach a wire to a fuse......

"Add-a-circuit". Can be picked up at the local auto parts. Or you can just wrap the wire around a fuse blade.

actually you don't even need to go to the fusebox.
When you remove the center console piece, there should be a large red wire under the ignition key cylinder. This should be an ignition switched power and you can tap this (with a fuse of course) to power your navi unit.
....Alternatively, you can cut the power wire to the cigarette lighter and put your ignition wire tap into the cig lighter. (important: remove the fuse for the cig lighter)

Electrical wiring help
I have a couple of questions concerning adding a power line to circumvent the dedicated power to the center console with an ignition switched circuit. First, I have a 2000 FRC and don't have a power antenna, so I was thinking of using fuse #24 which the manual says is for the power antenna. Is that the only thing that #24 is used for? If so, couldn't I simply install a fuse tap or add a circuit at that point? Secondly, I am away on business and not near my car to check, but what type of fuse tap would I need to purchase, an ATM or ATC, to work with the fuse box?
Any help would be great!
