Default Need help 1998 Corvette with auto questions

I'm looking at trading on a decent looking 1998 C5 coupe with 99,000 miles--- is there anything that I should be aware of?? anything that may go wrong in the next few thousand or so miles?

is the C5 (1998) vettes durable with almost 100k miles?

what is the value on a loaded C-5 with auto, new tires & brakes, chrome wheels ??

any comments would be helpful -- thanks much!

I'd pass and get one 2001 and newer. That is when most of the improvements were made to the car. Price difference is not that much.

I would do some reading in the tech area of the forum to see how things work, like pulling codes, etc ... before running out and buying a vette.

The entry price might be cheap but the repair parts and labor are not.

This is on a trade with a 71 Camaro roller body & some parts for it-- seems that I can't get a cash buyer on mine-- this persons wants to trade his asking price 14k C5 1998 Corvette for my Camaro. Just wanted to know about them and see what I'm getting into before the deal?

Being that I have a 1998 with an Auto I will get back to you later - I have to leave real soon.

You can also PM me and I will respond - I have done and worked on just about everything on the '98 - All I can say is the 1998 is the "BEST" year! Haha! (I wish they had a smile with the tongue hangin' out)

The '98 you are looking at sounds good and the price you are paying is "NOT" too high - I also have seen some $8000 - $10,000 and WOW they look so good in pics etc - but on further inspection and close inspection you see why!

If the trade + money is good for you financially and it suits you and you inspected the Vette then it is worth the deal - I got rid of my 1966 Chevelle for a Vette and never looked back, others thought I was crazy but for me it is what I wanted

Again you can PM me with any questions about the '98's with an A4 or any problem's you know it might have - 99,000 miles on the Vette is not a problem - I have 97,000 on mine!

Do NOT listen to the ohh the '99-up PCM is better blah, blah BS - I got 701 RWHP on the '98 PCM with my awesome factory fuel return line ETC>

Thanks,Matt

I think he may be a little high, but the bottom line is what you're really after. I just sold a tube chassis Grand Am to buy my vette. I had it on racinjunk for over a year, sold it on ebay finally. I try and not pay more than trade in value for private party deals. Sometimes that don't work out though. Mine has 136000 miles on it and runs very good. Learn how to pull the codes, then drive it for at least 1/2 in town and about that on the road if at all possible. It'll give you an idea if i's going to throw codes. If it does, time to negosiate. Good luck.

My 98 Auto had the engine rebuilt at 86K miles due to water pump going out, by previous owner.

Just try to get service records like I did and you can sleep at night if this is a big investment for you like it was for me.

Buy a Carfax, I did, just looking for flood posibilities such as being in New Orleans area or Hurricane areas.

These cars store codes when things aren't right. You need to learn how to retrieve the codes stored in the pcm. The tech section here has a lot of info. Don't remember where I found the codes but they're here someplace. My car throws a code for bank2 low efficently. Bad right bank cat. It don't do it if I drive it on the freeway, just in town. Haven't seen either car, but if it were me, the vette would be in my drive. I love mine and it still needs a little tlc.

Probably was the PCM (Which is the brains/computer for the Vette) not to worry that it has a brand new PCM - it then has all the latest updates for that year too already in it.

Codes just tell you what is going on in the Vette, there are sensors everywhere and they have peramiters so if something gets out of the peramiter the PCM will store the code and you can diagnose it the number stored.

Ex: Say your heater actuator got stuck , the PCM will have a code stored as to why it is not working as well as what side, even your seat has sensors and doors - it is so cool because it cuts any trouble shooting in half and points you in the correct direction. NOTHING to be scared of because it is just its own diagnostic tool.

Here is how to access them and read each code:

If it is in good shape sounds like a deal to me. Drive it for an hour or 2 check for codes get it inspected. If it all looks good you will be very happy. A roller for a Vette, can't beat that. The miles are nothing to be concerned about it has another 100-200k left in it.Mine is a 98, I love it.

You may have better luck posting your request in the C5 Parts for Sale / Wanted Section

I own a 1998 coupe with 95,000 miles on it. Still looks and runs great. I have done several mods but none to engine. I purchased it in 2002 and still love it.

Only advice I can give you is check it over close. Run a codes check on it. Check history. Even my 03 Coupe needed work when I bought it with 108,324 miles on it for 13.5 K bucks and 1 yr later 119,044. But, able to fix things that was wrong and did crop up. What helped me was the 2 other owners had all work on it done and save all the receipts which really gave me a good history on the car.
