Anyone know how to remove the glove box lock cylinder?
See title, I'm swapping over to a mod red interior and I need to pull the lock cylinder out of my existing glove box. I'm not the most mechanically inclined so any help is appreciated.

Put the key in and turn it all the way unlocked (I think). Anyway, you'll need to look at the side of the lock mechanism and you'll see a tiny slot along the outside. Use a small blade screwdriver or something to push down the little metal tab that is in the tiny slot and you'll be able to turn the lock even further until the mechanism comes out of the housing.

Thanks but there's a problem. I don't have the key for the new glove box (the mod red one), it's unlocked but turning the lock further than it is (or any way for that matter) is not a possibility. Any suggestions?

Only thing I can think of is a visit to your local locksmith.

I got it done today. In case anyone else has the same problem here's how to do it. Basically vetteman was right but instead of turning the lock to "unlock" you turn it to "lock" then depress the tab and keep turning the cylinder clockwise. Once you've got the lock at 6 o'clock it'll just pull out. After i did this i realized it was pointless since my kep unlocked the new box too. Oh well.

Glad you fixed it.
For anyone else who needs to do it here's the procedure
Lock Cylinder Replacement - Instrument Panel (I/P) Compartment Door
Removal Procedure
1. Open the I/P passenger compartment door.
2. Remove the screws retaining the passenger compartment door handle.
3. Remove the door handle.
4. Insert the key into the door handle lock cylinder.
5. Turn the key 1/4 turn clockwise (LOCK position).
6. Release the lock cylinder retainer.
Insert a small diameter tool into the slot on the RH side of the door handle and depress and hold the lock cylinder retainer.
7. Turn the key an additional 1/4 turn clockwise.
8. Pull to remove the lock cylinder.
Installation Procedure
1. Insert the key into the lock cylinder.
2. Insert the lock cylinder into the passenger compartment door handle.
Align the lock cylinder in the same position used for removal, then push to seat fully.
3. Turn the key 1/4 turn counterclockwise to secure the lock cylinder retainer.
4. Turn the key an additional 1/4 turn counterclockwise and remove.
5. Inspect the operation of the lock cylinder.
The lock cylinder should only allow a 1/4 turn and should be securely retained in the door handle.
6. Install the door handle to the passenger compartment.
7. Install the passenger compartment door handle retaining screws.
8. Close the passenger compartment door.

Yup, you got it. Where did you find these pics to post? I saw them in the shop manual but if there's a place that has them online it would be good to know about.

I switched over to a mod red interior too. Never changed out the cylinders as I couldn't figure out how to remove them either. Now, before I attempt to change them I need to see if my key will work with the cylinder hat is already in there. Worth a try. I don't have the mod red key either so I'm still not sure how I will get the cylinder to turn.

Update, I just put my back cylinder back in and tried what I said, it doesn't work. And it's not like you can just grind the old plastic piece and get the cylinder itself. Even if you did get the cylinder out, you still need a key that works for that cylinder to re install into the new housing. Crap, sorry. Maybe a locksmith, like some have said here.

So I know I hate to resurrect an old thread but is it possible to use a drill to drill out the cylinder that comes with the latch from a boneyard that you don't have a key for? Thus allowing you to be able to install the correct cylinder that came with the car that you have a key for?
