Filled the car up yesterday. Could not get the cap to stay on. Just turns and turns, nothing happens. Did a search on here and there doesn't seem to be a fix. New one is in the plan for next week.

When I am at the gas station, I often hear fuel caps clicking and chattering as each person completes the process of adding fuel to their vehicle. One good and swift clockwise turn and several clicks later, the fuel cap is secured nice and snug; maybe a few more clicks for some people - just for good measure.
I remember reading in my Lexus owners manual, where it is written that the fuel cap should be turned clockwise until one click is heard. The owner is advised not to overtighten.
Now, after consulting the 2004 Corvette owners manual, I noticed it says: " When you put the fuel cap back on, turn it to the right (clockwise) until you hear a clicking sound. Make sure you fully install the cap. The diagnostic system can determine........."
Now GM does not STRESS the importance of just turning the cap until one click is heard the way I remeber that Lexus does; but I believe the same rule should apply to EITHER vehicle.
There is a spring in the fuel cap. It is relativley sensitive. Just one or two clicks each time
you fill up is sufficeint to fasten the cap and satiisfy the emmissions system. Just one or two clicks might do well to prolong the life of the unit.
I know this doesn't help the OP now; but a word to the wise to everyone else.

Just bought a new gas cap on ebay and i see that the seller has already sold 16 of them! only 4 left! so i see that this is a problem that is just a matter of time that everyone will need to buy a replacement.

If you don't get the seal complete the computer can pick it up as an emissions malfunction. My hearing is not what it used to be so I don't always pick up the first click but it doesn't take a half turn either. Once you hear it click you should be good.

Well it may not be a common problem for some but I had 3 of the damn things from GM break. I finally went to NAPA a bought one of theirs. Only problem is the tether doesn't fit on it but I modified the tether to make it work. I only turned one click after the first one failed so that was not the problem.

Just replaced mine yesterday... Wouldn't tighten at all, plus I kept getting a error code.... So I spent 10 bucks for a new one at Autozone and had them clear the code hasn't been an issue since....

So tell me, what piece on your car could break without you claiming it was one more piece of GM trash?????
To the Op: the gas cap seal can go bad. I've had three or four caps need replacement on different vehicles. Not uncommon. Not expensive. Not life threatening.

I had same problem, but on my Saturn coupe, the cap has plastic arms that are spring loaded down, just one or two clicks are needed to seal the tank fuel spout. If you ratch it another 10 or more clicks, when you try to remove it, those plastic spring arms aren't strong enough and it stops working or breaks or bends. I replace the old one and cut it open, very cheap design, no metal at all.. Good Luck.

I had issues with my gas cap 2 years ago. Once and a while it would not "click" as I turned it on. I got a new replacement from NAPA just in case. My original gas cap has not given me a problem since I got the new one. I have the new one in my trunk for the day my original one starts to mess up again.

The same cap fits other vehicles not just GM. So, no not GM specs and as others have said, problems may have more to do with the operator.??

Mine crapped out also. Was still under warantee so the dealer gave me a new one. The managers exact response was " another fuel cap wtf!" lol. He said they were having problems with them. In fact he was ordering 12 of them at a time just to keep in stock.
