Tire question thread …again. Nitto tire life???
I want to run nitto tires. I don't want to screw up my traction control so I figured that the stock tires for the Z are 265/40/17 which equals 25.3 inches in diameter and 295/35/18 which equals 26.1 inches in diameter. I have only been able to find two nitto tire models that I can run slighter wider tires and still have the same ratio from front to back. The NT555R and the NT555R II, both of which are their "competition" tires and each are .3 inches taller in diameter than stock (not like 2 inches off or something that would confuse the TC). The one spec they list for treadwear is 100. I believe normal tires are 400 and for example, the normal NT555's are 300. How quickly will these tires wear out? I don't put on many miles, but a fair amount of miles are highway…I don't want to spend a lot of money to just have the tires wear out in 5 thousand miles. Any other tire brand/model suggestions that fit the size I want? 315's wont fit in the rear w/o messing with the car's computer would they? if so, who makes a good tire.
BTW, I've looked through a bunch of threads and performed searches, but all I seem to come up with is: they will fit, not they won't fit, stock rims and no brake-duct cutting will be ok, no aftermarket ccw, or the like, wheels are needed…..etc So, I haven't been able to come up with a definitive answer

This is a general answer, not anspecific answer to your question. I would recommend the Nitto NT-05 rather than the older tire you referenced. The front 17" wheel and 18" rear is the stock Z06 size, but it's the overall tire OD which the traction control and active handling look at, and as long as the rear tire OD remains larger than the front tire OD, then the active handling and other nannies will work fine. Lots of members track with "square" wheel sizes (FI) 305X18 on all 4 wheels, but turn off active handling while on track. There are also more tire options if you choose to go with 18" wheels all around.

I run the Hankook's on my CCW's... However, i run the NT05's on my OEM Alcoa's... 295/35/18 out back, 275/40/17 up front... They are perfect!

thanks guys. The reason I wanted to go with the 555R II's is b/c I wanted the wider 305 tire instead of the 295 stocker. I thought if I was increasing the front tire's diameter by .3 inches, I needed to do the same in the rear…? the 305/35/18 is exactly .3 inches bigger in diameter than the 295/35/18 GY F1 …..if I got 295 for the rear, the rears would be "shorter" than the fronts….the opposite of what 63Corvette said to do……Also, unless I'm wrong, the 555R II's are an updated (newer) drag radial, not just the basic 555 street tire….

gmc creary, how do those things hook up? from your avatar it looks like you roadrace, so I'm assuming they are great for handling and all around grip. I just want a super sticky dot legal tire that'll hook up like nobody's business. btw I have the nt555 275/40/17's on the front

I am running nitto invo's on my 2002 z06. 275/35r18 front and 325/30r19 rear. No traction control or active handling issues. The 555's are (in my opinion) sticky enough, but nt05's are too sticky for stock powered (or close to) vetted.

To the OP - I have 8k miles on my NT05's (200 tread wear) including one track day and a good amount of spirited driving, and I'm not even half way through the tread. I'd recommend them to pretty much anyone that doesn't do a lot of driving in the rain.
Also: 555 and NT05 are street tires; NT05 has better dry performance. 555R is a drag racing tire and 555R2 is for road racing.

I was in your same situation 1 month ago, I went ahead and bought myself a pair of 295/35/18 nt05s best bang for the buck tires and they r going to be my street tires, going to buy a set of drag radials on a second set of rims for track/kill mode. I barely have 200 miles on em but they hook pretty decent, can be driven in the rain without much problem, and the treadwear is 200 so it shouldn't wear out too quickly, and did i mention best bang for the bucK?

"The NT555's are rated at 300." should get you a few thousand miles, which is good. Dont plan on more then 5,000 or 4 years that would be pushing it for any performance tire.

Are you seriously claiming that a 300-treadwear tire isn't good for much more than 5000 street miles?

Roll With The NT05's best tire for the dollar. Got them installed and havent had one complaint. No TC issues or anything.

Have you considered the Bridgestone Potenza RE760s? They are avail in the stock z06 sizes. They were on my z06 when I purchased it. I have put 24,000 miles on the car since I got it and still on the same set of tires. The rears are getting close to the wear bars but still have some life left. They are quiet, great in the Florida down pours and I have cut 1.9x 60ft on them so I say they hook pretty good too. They are similiar in price to NT05s also.

thanks guys. It appears that Ill be going with the NT05's. I really wanted the 305 for the width, but the overall opinion and real world performance of the 05 seems to outweigh the 555R's.
