Default Looking for opinions of this anti-theft GPS tracker

What are people's impressions of this GPS tracking device?
http://www.rmtracking.com/gpsproduct...rt_tracker.php

It supplies on-demand tracking, so there are no monthly fees; you only pay when you actually need to track the vehicle (like if it's stolen). It also supports an optional starter interrupt relay, which can be activated remotely by the user.

Note that this allows you to pinpoint the location of your vehicle, as opposed to LoJack, which is simply a short range RF transmitter.

It seems to me like fairly cheap insurance. The only thing that bothers me is that it appears as though you can only purchase a finite number of "Locates" instead of being able to do continuous, real-time tracking. So if the car jacker remains on the move, it may still be difficult to find him.

Thoughts?

Nothing? I'm not expecting direct experience with this specific product, just first impressions of its features and how it might compare to other options out there.

I have had one on my other vehicles which are driven daily and are considered "high risk" as theft targets.

IMHO, it would be a waste on a vette, I have never heard of one getting stolen, especially a stock one.

The tracker I asked about, or a competitor's product? What's your opinion of their user software? Is it intuitive and detailed, or are there things about it you don't like?

You can buy a cheap cell phone and put an app gps tracker on it. Stuff it under the dash somewhere and wire to permanent power. I use "Where's my droid" but there are others that track the phone.

Yeah, I've heard that some people do that, but doesn't it require a monthly fee to keep the phone activated? What attracts me to the product I'm looking at is that you just buy and install the equipment, and it never costs you a cent afterward unless you're unfortunate enough to have to activate the tracking feature.

competitor product that would let you locate the car as much as you wanted.

It had some neat features such as the ability to track a car for a period of time which would be helpful if you had kids, or to tell when your dealer took your car for a test drive after service and just how fast the tech actually did go in that 35mph zone.

It was a neat toy but is only worth it if you have a car that is high theft risk or you want to track your kids (or wife)

Exactly. And I also like that it has an optional remote starter kill switch.

If I end up purchasing it, I'll update this thread with a review of it.

Post this in the Audio/Electronics section and you might get some good feedback. There are some pretty savy electronics/audio guys on there.

Oh yeah, good thinking.

I spend so much time in this forum and the SoCal Regional that I sometimes forget about the other ones.

It would be nice if your alarm went off your car would car your cell phone and warn you. Some alarm wizard should work on that. It could even tell you where your car is if it gets stolen by using something like the "wheres my Driod app".

If someone steals my car, I really don't want it back after they beat the crap out of it, and who knows what else they do.
Collect the insurance and move on.
