Damn man, what bad luck - never seen a passenger tire totally lose the tread like that. Good luck getting the car repaired.

Wow, that's scary stuff, glad you are OK. Keep us posted if you learn of the reason for the separation and any conversations with Michelin that you may have.

Sorry to see this.
I too would like to know:
(1) Date code on tire
(2) Minimum measured tread-depth on tread that came off
(3) Were they A/S ZPs or A/S PLUS ZPs?

That was my first thought but the car is only 9 yo and these arent the originals right? So that would make them somewhere less than 9yo and I wouldn't expect age to be the issue yet.

The age would be an issue, some tire dealerships knowingly sell tires that have been sitting in their inventory for years. CNN did a huge storyline on this a while back. Most "New" tires we purchase have expired shelf life. If I remember correctly, I think they said 6 years should be the longest a tire was good for.

Wow, had the same thing happen on my 77 with the original firestones back then....
(firestone actually had a recall on them, but I was 3rd owner and was unaware)
Didn't do that much damage though!!!!

so me and my dad have been tossing ideas around. what he thinks happened was that the air pressure got low, and we didn't notice, bc A.) they were run flats, and B.) because my wheel speed sensors, and pressure monitors have been very intermittent. i don't know how much you would notice low air pressure on run flats. it had some really odd wear on the outside edges.

I have had my '04 for about a year now, and have logged a little over 26K miles on it.
It had the Michelin P/S run-flats on it, which I had been very happy with.
Did I mention 26K spirited miles?
The tread on the outside and the inside looked to have another 10K left on them, but the center
rib was worn nearly to the belts. A couple guys in my club (Willamette Valley Corvettes) told
me that this is common occurrence with Corvettes and could lead to blowouts similar to yours.
And thank God you were OK.

Glad your ok and nobody got injured, that could have been crazy if spirited down twisties!
Thank god for small favors but that damage sucks!
Most tire shops won't touch any tire past 8 years old, that is the regulated expiration date.

I lost two treads on one of the Trans Ams (at different times), Kumho tires that were 6 years old with tread that looked new. Lost the right rear and the left front, both on 90-100 degree temp days.
To my knowledge I did not hit anything in the road but both times lost the tread. No damage to the car body though.
OP, good luck, sorry to see all that damage!

Those tires are from Feb 2010 based on the picture you took. For something like that to happen to such a new tire they must have been defective. I would contact Michelin and if they don't care to help contact a lawyer.
Crazy that would happen at 55mph to a "Michelin"! That's a manufacturing defect.
