I think a lot of anti-plasti-dip people are unjustifiably negative to it because its easy and cheap.
I haven't seen the plasti-dip mods in person, but I think they're popular because they look really good, and is cheaper and easier than doing alternatives (paint, vinyl). If you can achieve similar results with less hassle and less money, then why not?
Something being cheap doesn't make it bad or an eyesore. Something which looks cheap is bad and an eyesore.

well said...good point...if PD cost $100+ a can, them maybe some would accept it more...there is no doubt, the stuff LOOKS good...your point seems sound

What is sad to me is not what the last 2 posters said, but that there are people who actually think the way they describe. I don't care how much a material costs, the application is the acid test.
Lol...my professor told us about a study where women wouldn't use cheap priced makeup...the people conducting the study put a higher price on the cheap stuff and visa versa...the women then complimented on how much better quality the more expensive stuff was...so yeah, that way of thinking can be sad...
These cars are made for driving, racing and having fun.
My car is now on it's 3rd major "version" of mods since 2002, overall chassis is 92,000 miles old - it was a daily driver for almost 70,000 miles, a weekend warrior for 15,000 and an mostly flat bedded for the last 5,000 as we worked through various drive train glitches.
It has ALL the major points of complaints the rivet counters and polishers complain about, "primered' body panel, big wing, non-sponsored sponsor decals, "rice" interior and tacky fender flares.
On the upside it has 427ci of N/A power, stops and turns like a go-kart, can lap the local road courses at gut-busting speeds and most importantly - is exactly the car I want it to be - until I change it up again.
So the news that I am about to attack it with a couple cans of PlastiDip will probably send some folks to the ER.
It is things like this that make you really appreciate the "natural" beauty of an un-modded C5. About 90% of the mods I see done to Corvettes should be outlawed, but on the other hand they make the good ones really stand out.
"Cheap" doo-dads and mods seem to be really widespread in the Corvette culture. You rarely see that in other cars in their original price range and above.
Most cheap (and some expensive) mods on a Corvette enhance it about as much as slapping a tattoo on a pretty woman - no good looking woman has ever been "enhanced" by adding a tattoo and once that is done you barely notice the woman anymore as you eye is constantly drawn to the logo she has decided to promote for the rest of her life!
You know what they say about opinions...
There are a good number of reasons to use Plasti-Dip. I'll name off those that I can think of:
PlastiDip is great for race days when you want to protect the paint with something easier to apply and remove than masking tape.
It's temporary. If you're not sure what you want to do with a car, using PD is more effective than painting on a canvas.
PD is getting far more popular to the point that there are even primers now for it. The ability to change your car's paint color over night is now possible. No need to be so decisive.
The cost of using PD is hard to beat considering that a well done job will last over a year. And if it doesn't you can peal it off and your paint is perfect underneath.
Vynle wrapping costs more than painting a car and still requires your car to have flawless paint to begin with.
It protects the paint from the elements just as well as wax, but lasts longer.
It's easy to manage, touch-up, and clean.
You make changes to it without worrying about screwing up anything since it's cheap and easy to fix.
You can get it in any color now.
It's fun to peal off.
I'm thinking of using it to do my car to see if I like what it looks like afterwards. I want to paint my car, but not sure what color. PlastiDip is going to cost me about $160 to do my car 100% with 6-7 coats and it will last long enough to see if I like it or not. (Maybe weeks, maybe months)
BTW: Being in the industry I'm in I've seen LOTS of girls that look better with tattoos. Just saying...

Hehe Thanks but Aw hellll no. There are a bunch other C5Z's that my car takes a back seat to from back in the day and even now. The Caravaggio Widebody Z16 DNA, Orange Crush, No Mercy to name just a few. I am just happy to have been able to enjoy my Z for the last decade+. It has been on ehelluva ride
I bought some fiberglass reservoir covers used that were painted Grey. So instead of spending $150-200 to have them painted, I spent $6 on PD and they turned out awesome. They blend in with the factory flat black plastic parts.
Well now I know something else to put PD on. Those covers look great!

TOTALLY disagree with that OPINION. A woman's body is beautiful in itself. There is no need to interrupt the flow or sweep of her lovely curves by some unnecessary, sometimes grotesque, graphic.
Most of us fall into the "more mature" i.e. older generation, and like the flash of chrome. The younger generation, i.e. our kids, don't like the looks of chrome. My son wanted his aluminum wheels painted black on his RX-8, and I showed him some posts on plasti-dip, which is what he did, and it turned out great. He even coated his chrome side turn signal covers also.
I have to admit, it gave the car a more menacing look, and he is absolutely thrilled with it.

My wife has a few tats, and there are no "unblemished" bodies in this world that "I" find more beautiful than hers.
I agree. It's not for me but I respect the courage and creativity of all the people that do it. I think you're addressing a younger generation. I'm 56 and like my torchred coupe to be shiny with chrome or polished wheels. My Harley is glossy black and chromed out. The younger guys I know would have the same bike and change all that chrome to black.
We think alike my brother. I have no use for PD on my Vette unless it is in the engine bay. I believe folks can do what they like to their cars since I don't have to drive them. It's temporary so no harm no foul. Not for me but to each is own.
