I might be mistaken, but I believe when assembled there was a foam like piece that was stuck over the screws to prevent them from poking the Top. What happens over time is the sticky backing on the Foam loses its adhesion, and falls off. Leaving the screws uncovered.
When I had my Top replaced I had the installer use short Rivets instead of the Screws. No problem since.
My 01 is all original and there is nothing like that on mine to protect my top. A friend of mine stopped over yesterday with his 03 and nothing on his either , but we did notice that they used different screws on his from the factory. The screws were a little shorter and blunt on the ends and he has not had a problem with his yet.

My 00 was original also. I believe I have one of the Foam pieces that were used; it had fallen off into the Trunk area. That is the problem I believe, once they fall off it is only a matter of time before you get the 2 screw holes if gone unnoticed.
I really appreciate this thread. I don't get on the c-5 site very often since its mostly redundant to issues discussed at length in the year 2000. however this may be a new issue. my 98 conv. has the two little holes in the same place on both sides of my top. I had blamed my wife's poor cat, but now know real reason. you can always learn something new. thanks.

Well said Mr Fool.., I was afraid the holes in the top of my '98 was unique to me. The car's clock shows 80k miles, but other than those damm holes it still looks, feels new.
Fact is I've been meaning to replace the top, R2R's misfortune has put alot of us on notice.
This is what I saw the morning after I took my first top down ride. These holes would have been staring me in the face every day. The shop said they've never seen this before and he told me he called around to other, plus the fabric manufacturer, who hadn't seen OEM screws do this. I told him you need a process where the tech runs gloves over the areas with screws so you confirm nothing will poke.
Ironically, I am just experiencing this marks in the passenger side of my 2000 vert. I have owned this car for 2.5 years and have just seen this develop. I will put some duck tape on the inside of the top where this is taking place and see if that helps.

Unfortunately the duct tape won't help. The screws are sharp and will poke right through the tape . As I mentioned earlier it is only about a twenty minute job to correct the problem.

The tape (I used Gorilla Tape) is just a way to keep it from leaking. The solution is to make sure the top folds properly - out rather than in - and trimming off the sharp tips of the screws.
K9Leader Red cars are faster. They did a study on it.
