iPod/AUX input into factory radio write up for $3
#201
I'd like to have a plug(male) instead of a jack(female), would I be able to just wire in a 1/8" plug by splicing into the left and right stereo wires (4 and 5)? Would just like to have a stereo plug coming out of the ash tray area instead of another wire to lose.

Hello, I just wanted to say thanks for the write up! It worked out perfect and I really like the outcome Mine is a 99 and it had the older style radio internals with a 12 disk CD changer in the back, I cut the 4th and 5th wires and It cuts out the radio when I plug the aux in. Im 22 years old and nothing was too difficult, just time consuming. Really wish I would have done this sooner. Thanks again!!!

Your instructions worked perfectly for my 97', obviously I had the old style with no changer. Took me about 3 hours, used wires 4&5. No feedback at all, sounds great using Pandora on my Galaxy S7. Installed the aux jack inside the console near the power port. Now I can charge and play

Anyone know which wires to tap into on a 02' with a cassette deck and a CD changer? I would assume the wiring would be different since there is no CD player on my deck. Any assistants would be great.

Great write up! I've done this twice. first to a new style, no changer, and second to an old style with changer. Same wires as noted worked. I use white out to mark where the hole goes for the jack. I just dip the metal part of jack into a little puddle of white out I made on the bench and place it into position inside the faceplate. Then i pilot from the middle of the white out circle with a tiny bit and drill from the outside with a 15/64 bit. Super clean. Positioning is very easy with minimal trimming inside the faceplate. Thanks for the great info!

I did this this and it works great. As someone else suggested I installed the jack in the console. It's a little handier there I think. I also installed a BlueTooth adapter.
I suggest using solid wire cat5 cable instead of the stranded stuff. It's a lot easier to solder. Also try to use the same colors of wire from the cable as used in this thread. This way you can go back to the thread to troubleshoot if something doesn't work.

Thanks for the write up. It worked perfectly on my 2001 vert. I had the new style and used wires 1 & 3. I created a silent track CD. Sounds great!. I also installed the female jack in the console.

I finally read all 11 pages of this. The one thing I could not find is the cut off year for old style VS new. Seems like 2000 up are new for sure but not enough to narrow it down more. I would much rather use the 4/5 wire (radio) than the 1/3(cd). I have a 99 without a CD changer.
I will NOT try 4/5 out . research twice cut and solder once. one and done for me

I know this thread is old, but it's been used a lot through the years - the photobucket pictures in the thread, yes all of them including the oP's, do not show up at all, just FYI to the people who put pictures in the thread.

photobucket recently stopped their "FREE" 3rd party hosting. I used them for every forum. now people won's see anything.

For $20 you can get a Bluetooth FM transmitter. I just got one from Amazon that looks just like a 12V USB charger. Has the charging ports and it sounds just like any station on the factory radio, IMHO.
To each his own, but that's good enough for me. My maps app audio comes through the speakers and I can listen to Pandora. No hassle in taking the radio out and performing surgery.

@ jjaaam - can you provide a link to the one you bought on Amazon?

This particular one works great (in my case) for music...but not for taking/making calls. I have a different unit for my Grand Prix that works a little better in that regard but it's a lot bigger. I like this one because of the size.
It only has three stations you can transmit to but it seems to be strong enough to overcome any signal on those channels.

that ok for some but some sound quality is lost that way, i guess tho if it was about sound quality (like myself) you'd swap out the head unit at some point

Sweet! Nice write up and good pics. All our Radio Shacks folded so I'm ordering jack off eBay. Just as a note, it's important to get a "closed circuit" stereo jack.

Just in case you don't have right radio for the upgrade...
I wanted to do the $3 upgrade but, my 2004 radio didn't have the separate RF board so there were no wires to splice into. Since I still wanted to have a aux input on the radio faceplate, I purchased the iSimple PXDX with PXHGM4 harness and ran the aux input wires to the front aux plug. I then purchased the wireless bluetooth bullet shown below for about $12 delivered on eBay. This unit has a HD mic for hands free calling and lasts 4 to 5 hours on battery. Apps I use in the car: SiriusXM, Pandora, iHeart Radio, Google Maps for audio turn by turn directions and music stored on my phone storage card. This setup worked so well, I use it in my 2004 DeVille.
