Default Is this a warning sign?

Hi I was looking at a 2001 convertible, in the engine compartment all the fluid fill caps and dip sticks were marked with a yellow line from a grease pencil. Any one know why they would do this?

Only thing I can think of is maybe it made it easier for the owner to see exactly where the fluids should be filled to. Other than that, your guess is as good as mine.

May be a sign that a mechanic uses so he;s remembered which fluids he's checked.

Well…..since you asked,Unless there is a considerable price differentiation ,I would steer clear of this car. There are plenty of non accident C5s out there. Check this site or flea bay.Not saying that things cannot be fixed correctly, just better in the long run if everything is original. A retired collision guy.

I'm sorry I forgot I'm in Canada so the prices are a bit high than the USA... but if you convert the currency I think the USA prices are a bit more high

Hi folks, I am a newbie on the forum. I am just beginning a search for a C5. I am leaning toward a 2003 Anniversary Edition Convertible. From what I am reading on the forum the magnetic ride control concerns me and from what I have seen so far most have that option.

1st question - is the failure rate that high that I should steer clear?
2nd question - would there be any out there without that option?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Welcome to the forum and the '03 AE cars are really beautiful ones. As far as the magnetic ride goes, I do not think that they fail all that often (unless the car has a lot of miles on it), but when it does, the cost to replace the shocks is quite high. If that worries you, there is always the option of tuning out the option and running regular shocks on the car, which will be much more inexpensive.

All '03 AE cars came with Magnetic Ride on them. The standard coupe and convertible had the Magnetic Ride as an option.

Here's a writeup on how the magnetic ride can be tuned out:

Thanks Vetteman Jack, since I am somewhat in the discover phase, I will try to do a better job of searching the forum before asking too many questions.

I am not buying the car on speculation although I would hope that a 50th Anniversary Edition would hold their value a little better, I would like to keep it stock as long as possible.

The car will not be driven hard ( well maybe once in a while ) and will be somewhat of a garage queen.

I am in no rush and can afford to be patient. I hope to lineup someone to inspect a car for me before purchase and do as much upfront homework as possible. I have a lot of reading/researching to do.

Pete - don't worry about asking questions - that's how many of us have learned the ropes about the C5, me included. There are many very knowledgeable people here that can help guide you through the in's and out's of the buying and owning experience.

Thank You. A couple of questions.

A looked at a couple of cars this weekend and I can notice orange peel mostly on door panels. I obviously want to stay away from a repaired car, but it seemed to be pretty common. Is orange peel from the factory obvious on most C5's? Or should I expect to find a car that is straight with little peel. And are waves a indication of repair as would be with a metal car?

Also is Navy Blue metallic a somewhat rare color. I came across a 2000 with Navy Blue Exterior and Oak interior. Loved the color combo. I ask about the color as it isthe only came across one.

Thanks.

Many cars, if not all, came from the factory with some degree of orange peel on them. I hardly notice it on mine, but I'm sure it is still there. If the car has some waves in the finish, that does not seem normal to me. If you seriously consider that car, have it looked at by a trusted body shop.

As for the Navy Blue exterior, only 2254 cars were painted that color in 2000. Out of 33682 cars produced that year, that is a pretty low total.

Default Thanks!

Thanks so much for this post. I go tomorrow to checkout a C5 armed with a buttload of valuable info. If all goes well I'll own my 1st Vette at at age 63. Never too old, right.

The links in post #1 going to the mediafire download site causes my malware program to block the downloads due to malicious software warnings. Just an FYI...

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll alert calvins since he is the one who did the magic to get the files posted here in this thread. Meanwhile, if there are files you want, just PM me your e-mail address and I can send them to you that way.
