I need to replace a back up light bulb. How does one get access to the bulb? Is it work upgrading while I have it apart?

Upgrading, That would be a MOD... That would de-value your car.
To change the bulbs you need to remove the lic plate and then under that is 4 screws I believe and the whole backup light unit will come out...

Default Back-up lights ?

I installed a clear lens and only half the number of reflectors in the lens itself. I upgraded to a "ADJURE #41389 license plate holder and back-up combination unit, but I then put a set of 1156 PIAA 1156 MINIATURE 27W XTREME WHITE REPLACEMENT BULBS. These little babies will light up your whole driveway. My driveway is a 75 foot and I have a knee wall on one side then out on the street I couldn't see clearly for parked cars, but these bulbs really light up the back of the car for fifteen feet or more. This combination will change you rearview totally.

You can also remove a tail light on the side that is out and reach down and twist the plug out. Then replace the light. Unlike some, I like mods if they bring value to use. I have Adjure assy with Corvette Mods HID back up lights and they really light everything up and allow my reverse camera to work great in the dark.

That is how I have accessed my back-up lights before.
