Default garage floor

it's finally time to think about re-doing the floor. it was painted in the past, and the hot tires have lifted the old paint. i know i'll need to strip the old paint before the epoxy, but just wondering if others have put down tile or plastic. what does your garage floor look like and why did you do what you did???

Try the Garage Journal forum. There's plenty of coating info over there.

We bought Rustoleum floor paint at Lowe's. Etched the floor, put two coats of primer down, three coats of color, and two coats of clear. Needless to say there was a lot of time and effort involved and we followed instructions to the letter. After a year of being down we are very disappointed and wouldn't use it again. It's peeled up in several spots. If you roll the floor jack on it to lift a car for service the paint comes up. I'd recommend you not go this route.

A little pricey, but you get what you pay for. Follow the instructions and you will have a beautiful floor that will last. I've had mine down for about 3 yrs now with no issues. This is good stuff! If I remember correctly I think it costed around $1300.00 for my 32X42 floor.

VCT here and it still looks great after 8 or 9 years.

Vinyl Composite Tile - it's the stuff they use in schools and grocery stores. Wears like iron and is impervious to just about everything.

I used the Quickrete epoxy when we built our house and garage. It has help up well over 7 yrs of serious car abuse. I have spilled every fluid used in the vette on it, and I mean every one. Unfortunately, I did not put it down thick enough and it has scraped up in a couple of places. Being a new garage helped as there was not oil or grime to prevent from bonding. Going to redo mine in the fall and Quickrete said there would be no issue recovering it, so we'll see.

WKMCD--what type of prep was required to install the VCT and what was your cost for that job?

I have Racedeck easy to keep clean, only negatives is it does create some static electricity, and I put a Masonite liner under my floor jack because the floor will dent if you jack directly on it, and jack stands will probably leave dents as well, also makes a clicking sound when you walk on it, a liner under it would probably eliminate that.

I pressure cleaned the entire floor, spashed any existing oil stains, marks, spots etc with muratic acid. Pressure washed again and let it dry completely. Cost was $600 or so.

I am putting VCT down this weekend. My garagae 21 X 24, the VCT, glue, weather stripping for under the garage door, cost me about 350.00 in material. Depending on color the tile can be purchased for about .66 cents a square foot at Lowes or Home depot.
I scraped my floor to remove some left over glue from construction and some paint that I dropped when finishing the garage.

Racedeck is awesome. A friend has their freeflow system which rain or other liquids to drain down and out of the garage.

He also mentioned that although the tiles can aborb the weight of the jack and jack stands, they can leave a mark depending on the weight. His solution was larger sections of wood that he placed under the jacks and jack stands. That helped in preventing dents and evenly distributing the pressure.

With salt, sand, and gravel that ends up on our garage floor from my wife's Jeel Liberty during the winter, then ground into the concrete when driving in and out, what type of floor sealer or covering would hold up to such brutal punishment? I have a real working garage with various oils that also end up on the floor during oil changes and from lawn equipment. I'd like a nice floor finish that I don't need to be watchful over...basically neglect all year long, doing only my annual power wash. My gargae floor to-date has 24 years worth of wear and tear.
