How doe CA work? Here in MO, for cars like mine (full boltons) you will fail emissions, then after spending $200 to fix the issue, the state has to pass you. So you just slip some hodge podge shop a few extra bucks and have a nice day.

If I had to de-mod my car every 2 years for inspection I wouldn't own it.

It's pretty much the same here - but lately State is starting to go after the hodge podge shops with undercover cars, then issuing fines in the $10k range when they get busted.

Sarge, where you at? I'm in south bay LA. I have the OEM airbox. I will loan it to you. I run a blackwing also. Or I will tell you who my smog guy is. He never says boo about the intake.

Thats how it was here in Oklahoma in the past. Problem was that the miniscule cost of the inspection was split between the state and the shop and it just wasn't worth the time to the shop owner. They said to screw it.

And then after the state pulls that chit, the shops tell them to GFT. It's not worth the hassle. $10k fine for doing the state's work? Let the state do their own crap. They can put in their own shops, hire their own help and collect 100% of the $$ from the inspections. They'll see quick enough that its not a viable process. That process would do nothing but add to the huge debt that the state has. Not here, TYVM.

Glad to hear you got an offer of help even before I got to the end of the post. Ca has a smog problem and this is the result.

IF some background helps, I was doing some carpentry work in the valley, long ago, in my younger days and couldn't see the end of the next block from the intersection, and my eyes were burning. Over forty years later, children in the SF Valley are still anticipated to have permanent lung damage from the air quality, unless they move out before eight years of age.

As a man dedicated to promoting goodness in general, I hope this small understanding helps you deal with the frustrations. You can see what I mean with a visit to Pacific Beach on a summer day. AS you look out across the Pacific, on a bad day, a giant light brown fog bank looking thing drifts down from L.A. up north and it is pretty disgusting.

Enjoy your time in America's finest city. I know the guy from Tampa doesn't think so, but it is a nice place.

Ya, state mandates the price of inspection/emissions here in MO. So what ever that fee is, I usually just slip another $50 in there, and I'm g2g. Usually if you drive to a shop and find one of the mechanics talk to him for a few minutes and tell him your situation he'll help you out, or he knows a guy. =P

You should be able to pay the registration, if it's a renewal, without the smog check. You'll have something like 90 days to get the smog done. Do pay the registration fees before the due date to avoid expensive penalties.
I have a similar problem with the carbon-fiber air duct I have installed. Every two years it comes off, then goes back on after the smog check.
The cheapest thing for you to do is buy a used stock system, probably under $50.

First like said above - SLP Blackwing is not a CARB approved air filter for our Vettes!

Where are you located? (My smog man does not object to the Blackwing!)

Thanks,Matt

Wouldn't it be easier as a favor to someone who is defending our country to just send him a sticker from your approved carb device. He sticks it on the device then sends it back to you.
ps. That is if the approved device has a sticker like my Vararam.

Guys I have a few options locally I'm working in my other thread. Thank you very much for the help.

As far as calling K&N that was the first thing I did but the want you left ******** to prove your not doing something funky. You have to send vin info and pictures of it mounted and all kinda of stuff. I also thought about outside registration but it's almost as bad in NY where I am from. Just cheaper. My car with NY plates costs me like 70 bucks every 2 years. Way cheaper then here.

Hopefully I can work this out this weekend. The smog place thankfully isn't going to charge me a second smog fee when I bring it back.

If you have ever huddled up in front of a fire on New Years Day to watch the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl game and thought, "Hey, that would be a nice place to spend the winter!", note that these are NOT live events. They are recorded on the same soundstage used for the Apollo moon landings, with the aid of a ton of very expensive special effects provided by George Lucas and James Cameron. The winter climate in Southern California, in spite of what you think you're seeing on TV, is roughly the same as Buffalo, NY, except with more wind. The summers are more like equatorial Africa, except for a few weeks in September when the wildfires reduce the humidity slightly. Wherever you are now is certainly a better place to live and there is absolutely no reason for you to consider moving here.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Did I mention the earthquakes?

Correct. Vararam is not CARB approved.
Was just asking if other CAI which were CARB approved had stickers like the Vararam (which is not).

Yep, it's strange how much flak California gets from people who don't live there, and yet, it is not the largest state, but has the largest relative population.
Has the largest economy of the nation.
Has the most desirable climate (low humidity, lots of sunshine, warm temperatures). Like 80 degree Christmas Days in many/most parts of the state.
Has some of the best roads in the nation. (it's not all Downtown L.A. or Interstate 5).
Smog is restricted to parts of L.A. and SF, and while I have to admit that at certain times of the year that smog has to be seen (breathed) to be believed, that is why there are certain emissions requirements in the state.
Has the highest agricultural economy of the nation. (Rice, tomatoes, almonds, grapes, lettuce, strawberries, eggs, cattle, milk, cotton, oranges, walnuts, peaches, etc, etc.).
Has coastal regions to shame the best, Big Sur, Malibu, Hermosa Beach, Newport Beach, Redondo Beach, Marina Del Rey, Playa Del Rey.
Has mountains, Mt Whitney (14, 505ft), Mt Shasta (14,179ft) to name two of many.

I'm glad that California keeps getting a bad rap from those who don't live there.

Yup. I first came here close to 40 years ago, and believe me, the smog was much worse then. That said, despite SoCal's reputation for bad air, the worst smog I've seen in my life wasn't here: it was in Denver, winter of '71/'72.

Anybody wants to do without emissions testing, be my guest...just do it well downwind.
