Everyone talks about smoking the tires in first, second and sometimes third gears. is this all true?
When i go from a roll i get some tire spin and bark them into second, but never smoking them in second or third.
Any one else get one like mine or am i just the slow exception?
Your car sounds normal. At least mine does the same.
Tire temperature makes a big difference in how much wheel spin I get. In the summer weather, I get exactly what you described. In the winter, I remember the car going sideways for most of 1st and 2nd and chirping the first part of 3rd. But with the hotter asphalt now the car just hooks up a lot better. Plus I'm sure the motor makes less power in the hot, humid air than it did back in the cold winter months.
I haven't "smoked" the tires on any of my rides. They're too darn expensive!
My last two cars would on demand "spin" them like crazy in 1st,2nd & even 3rd
with the traction control off and the active handling on (competetive driving
mode). The active handling keeps the car straight and the tires spin like crazy.
They don't squal or squeal, they sort of buzzzzzz... :D
cop,
I call :bs ........like the man said.......it depends on the surface & temps......also, do you launch at 5k plus????
If you do and powershift, you will most certainly smoke them....and maybe other things as well....
The reason the F1's are on there, is to KEEP it hooked.....
The way your car responds is typical of all '01's & '02's.....
Stock.........
I think your car is normal. Smoking the tires usually requires:
A. An attempt, revving the engine and dumping the clutch,
B. Moisture,
C. REALLY poor traction for some reason, like oil buildup on the road, or sand...
Otherwise, in a STRAIGHT line, you should be able to get on it pretty hard without excessive wheelspin.
I don't think your car is a dog.
For reference, I had a 2000 coupe before this with the usual mild mods (breathless air filter, 178 stat, throttle body bypass and such - nothing wild).
In many instances, I could carefully run it at WOT on wet pavement (on the right pavement and, as I mentioned - carefully) and not lose total traction.
Did I have a dog? I raced 6-7 C5's over the time I had the car. Beat ALL BUT ONE, which was a yellow conv 2000 and we were DEAD even. I don't think it was a dog.
On the street, warm day, with the car in competitive mode I can bark the tires on the 1-2, 2-3 and sometimes 3-4 shift. 1st gear at the track on a 3K launch I can spin them all day long if I wanted.
So what.
Take the car to the track and see what times you can make, that is what matters :)
if I remember right, NoMercy posted about the test ride he had in his beast, either most of the throttle, or WOT it hooked and just took off.. (of course he has larger tires, but ALOT more power than a stock Z06)..
To put your vette in Competition Mode, you simply hold down the active handling button for five seconds, and on the DIC the words "Competition Mode" will pop up. What this does, is it lets you have full control of the rear wheels, while still maintaining the active handling part of the car. Now if you turn the car off and back on again, the Competition mode will disengage. It really works. I used it at the drag strip, I did one run with it on and one with it off, and the run I turned it on I knocked one second off my time.
From a roll, my 2002 Z won't spin them in 1st. But on hard speed shifting it will spin them into 2nd, 3rd, sometimes 4th. Since I can run mid 12's in crappy weather without riding the clutch on launch I think this is normal for the Z06.
Depends on how you dump the clutch in 1st and when it was stock, I chirped second all the time. Powershifting, my ash would get loose in second and I'd chirp third. It's probably just in how you drive it.
On dry roads in warm weather, mine spins 1st all day long if I want to and chirps into 2nd and 3rd if I try. On wet roads, there is no way you can go WOT in 1st or 2nd and have a chance at staying straight. Even 3rd gets the limited slip wiggles at 80 mph on a slightly wet road.
For those who compare to coupes, there is no comparison, even with a few mods. In the wet, the power just explodes at 4000 rpm and tears them loose if you are not carefull. Shorter gearing, less weight and the shape and numbers in the power curve make for a very different animal over 4000 rpm. Now anyone with a supercharger would admitedly have a handfull on their hands...

I agree. Without knowing any other details about you or your car, this sounds normal.
There seems to be a misconception (I had it too) that a 400+ HP car will just spin the tires any time you want. I think it stems from driving normal passenger cars and thinking, hey, if this thing had triple the horsepower, it would spin like crazy! Luckily, our Z06's have more on a passenger car than just power. Get down on your hands and knees behind the car and just gaze at those tires! There like 5 miles wide!  And the handling technology that is specifically designed to keep you on the track...ooohhhh (Homer drooling sound:yesnod:)
Not sure how long you've had your 06 but as you start to learn the car and it truly breaks in, you may find you have more power on your hands than you thought. Driven around town normally, the car is very sedate and docile. Hit "Competitive Mode" and drive agressively and a whole new animal is born.
