Low MPG on highway?
I took a road trip last weekend and was only getting around 24.5 - 25 MPG on the highway. 2003 A4.
Was not driving excessively fast or hard (cruise set around 70).
I've heard of people getting much better gas mileage (closer to 30 MPG). Any ideas as to why mine is on the low side?

If someone with an A4 is getting 30 mpg on the highway, they have an exceptionally unusual car. I have an '03 A4 and the best I have gotten on the highway is around 26.5-27 mpg. Usually I get around 24-26 mpg so yours is not really all that bad.
The six speed cars have been known to get 30 mpg or better on the highway.

Could be due to any number of factors. Air temp, wind, tire pressure, fuel, plugs.
What are you getting when you check your instant MPG on the DIC?
Regardless of what my average MPG is (28), I still like to check the "instant" MPG (as high as 32) to make sure everything is working right.
But then I guess if something was wrong, it would throw a code.

Plus, there are two rear axle ratios for the A4, 2.73 standard axle (GU2 RPO) and 3.15 performance axle (G92 RPO). (check in your glove box lid)
My 3:15 returns around 27mpg at 70 mpg on the freeway, the 2:73 should probably return around 30mpg at 70mph on the freeway.
Either way, I wouldn't worry about any slight deviation from these figures.

Didn't think of the M6 vs. A4 though. My bad.
Also, I DO have the 3:15.

I've taken a couple trips from Mesa, AZ to the very small town in eastern NE. Didn't check my mileage until I got back to AZ. Not saying the DIC is correct but I got almost 29 mpg round trip both times. That included city and rural driving along with the intersate. I do have the A4 with the 2:73 gears though. When I frist got the car back in '07 I averaged just over 30. But then I got a custom tune, exhaust and other things that might affect the mpg. The more you do to the motor, the more your mpg will be affected.

I don't pay attention to mpg. Very rarely use 6th gear. If I am on I-5 and expect to cruise for hundreds of miles I'll use 6th. Locally it's fifth. It sounds good and still responds pretty good this way. Just in case anybody wants to play. We probably average 15 mpg. Make that FPG. Fun miles per gallon.

I have a 2002 A4 and I take an 1000 mile trip all high way every year and I always get 29-30 mpg using the cruise control set at 65-70.

Most gas stations, if not all, have switched over to winter blend gas as well.
Here are some general things that impact mpg (of any gas powered vehicle) as the weather gets colder...

How are you calculating your gas mileage? For more accurate readings, it should be done the old fashioned way (by recording how many gallons you put in to the same level, and the miles driven). The DIC may not be accurate. FWIW, 24-25 is not bad for an A4. In my ZO6, at 70 in 6th, I get probably 26MPG or so. Close to 30 if doing 55 in 6th, but, who does that for an extended period of time?
Also,
The post above is correct - you get less mileage on the crappy winter gas, and colder temps.

You are right in the ballpark my 1850 mile caravan trip to Bowling Green averaged 24.87 with some bumper to bumper traffic. Overall driving for the 3 years I've owned the '03 A4 I'm averaging 23.2, somewhat less than the 26.3 I was getting with the '01 6 speed.

I have a '98 A4 car. According to the DIC I get 29 MPG on cruise at 65.
I do a couple of things when I'm cruising that might help. When I come on the gas I do it rather slowly. I know the computer modulates the fuel flow, but how deep you push the pedal tells the computer how quick you want to accelerate. Also, I try to keep plenty of distance between me and the car in front so that I can go further coasting when the traffic slows or stops. That way I don't have to waste all the gas I just spent getting up to speed.
When I'm in a hurry I don't care about the gas mileage. I push the pedal deep and hold it down as long as I can.

Now beforehand? Don't know. Bought it from a dealer with limited maintenance records. I thought it was stock but then I noticed something that looked odd on the exhaust...turned out there were cutouts installed.
I'm not a "car-guy" so I had to come on the forum with a pic for someone to tell me what "cutouts" were...and they also said that just the fact that they were there probably meant that at some point in time someone was having fun. No idea what - if anything - has been done though.
To quote from that thread - my new wife was probably a **** star in a previous life...
...But I tend to drive it like Gramma does.
