Default Testing Gauage Cluster UV Bulbs

Ok my turn to ask for help.

Is there any way to turn on the UV bulbs in the gauge cluster out of the car?

Can a 9 volt battery be used to run these? and if so which wires are the power wires into the cluster if that is where I make my connections.

I would like to make some changes to my cluster, but want to test to see how it looks before hand and would need to do it out of the car.

I did lots of searches but did not find what I needed to know.

And I know about the control box that runs them just not sure where to make the connection to run them.

Thanks

You can do it but you should use 12 volts, not sure 9 will be adequate for the high voltage power supply.

Also recommend you use a correctly sized female terminal to allow you to make connections away from other pins so you don't fry something. The correct Delphi terminal is 12146447.

If you still want to pursue I can provide the connector pin outs for you. Just need your year car. I think they are all the same for the IPC but I have all years so I would prefer to be sure.

Yes I intend to proceed, car is a 2003, did not think about buying a terminal connector, I have mini alligator clips and I planned to isolate the other pins by sliding shrink wrap over them, I absolutely do not want to fry this cluster car only has 8,000 miles.

Thanks

Also give me pin locations & wire colors if you know so I can double check, I know I have 2 powers in, I think one is from the headlight switch.

I will provide you with the Connector view which has everything. It should have a couple of power inputs as well as grounds. Using caution as you described should be fine.

I will be providing you a PDF file so you need to send me a PM with your email address. Should be able to do it tomorrow or Friday.

Failure of the UV bulbs to light up can be caused by a bad MF switch so if they are not lighting now this should tell you where the issue is.

Please update this Thread with your results for others.

Mr. Sam

PS: I was not suggesting you get a Connector but some of the individual pins/terminals. I have some and use them to test various components. The P/N I gave you is good for the PCM, BCM and a ton of other components like switches, radio, and HVAC in the C5. The terminals are different for many other connectors in the car like the fuse boxes and seat connectors. etc.

Just to update to anyone viewing this, I do not have any issues with my cluster just doing some changes that I would like to see before I complete and install back in the car. Because the gauges are lit from the front with the UV bulbs the changes you make can effect how it looks at night.

And I will reply back with results so others can benefit as well.

I will look into that terminal.

Thanks Mr. Sam for your help.

Steve, sent you the connector view. Let me know if you have any questions.

Remember, this view is looking into the connector and not the IPC.

Just an update, I have a bench tester for my cluster being delivered today, I will update more when I see how it works & work out any bugs if needed.

I finally got my bench tester I had made up so I could run my cluster out of my car. I contacted Bryan at http://www.batee.com/ after seeing some of his C4 dash cluster videos on Youtube. He does not work on C5 clusters but may in the future, he was more than happy to help me create what I wanted.

Looks like I won't be making any changes this year since driving season is here but next winter I will be trying some ideas, I have already made my leds for my DIC & HUD switches.

Nice job on the LEDs!

Did you follow a write up, or did you do these yourself?

If you have any more info I'd love to do something similar.

Thanks!

I did my own, I had purchased some plug & play from some of the vendors on here but returned them because I was less than impressed with the quality. The 10mm sizes for my door switches & DIC were very easy to upgrade just by replacing the std bulbs with the leds & using the original bulb housings, the 8mm housings for the HUD required some modification to work with the bulbs I had ordered, but I preferred to use them so I knew they would fit the circuit boards without damaging them.

I did take some pictures, so I should probably start a thread showing what I did.

So, which bulbs in the cluster are actually UV? I thought they were all incandescent, visible light bulbs...

They're in the top of the cluster, if you look up with the lights on you can see the purple glow.

Hmm. Wonder if mine have gone out somewhere in the past 130k miles, never noticed them before.

On my cluster I used B17 the brown wire to run my lights, the 2 pins listed for grounds are B15 & B13.

The other 12v power sources are A13 & A14

If it fluoresces like the ones above and you can see it at night, then they're working.

That's one of the things I love about the C5 cluster, it glows so pleasantly at night due to not being backlit, but having UV lamps.
