C7Z style tail lights on a C5
I came across these photos on Instagram, account name "thatcorvetteguy". I asked him where he got them and he'd said he'd made them himself using a clear lens with a black housing. I think it looks great and goes incredibly well with his C7Z rep wheels. Anyone know how to go about finding clear lenses like this to be able to recreate this?

Made himself...doubt it.
Bought on Ebay...Likely. Search C5 Corvette Clear Taillight and you'll find some results. Just found 2 myself.
Advice...not legal unless you have some other red showing rearward and can be seen without lights on from 'x' feet away. I don't recall the designated footage by law and it may vary by state, but it was an issue back in my Import days. Your call though.

He could have made them himself...
What a coincidence they look so similar to the ones you can get on ebay.
I've attached several strips of red reflector material to a few locations in the rear. You can see two of the three strips that bracket my license plate frame. They are very visible and are not lit with anything other than the flash from the camera.
They are visible at night from over 600' on lo beams and well over 1000' with hi beams. If memory serves, I believe this exceeds the required USDOT rear red reflector visibility distance(s)...
I like this mod on my speedway white and wouldn't really consider it a "C7" taillight mod.
Just my opinion.

Those are different - but I'm just not a fan of the clear taillights on a C5.

The main difference is that the inside housing is painted black to give the "smoke" appearence that the C7 has. Looks a lot better than plain clear or blacked out IMO. Pretty easy DIY if you have some clear lenses. Of course, everyone will have a difference in taste but all in all, I don't think they look bad with the painted housings.

I understand that the black housing on the inside is what gives the lens a gray look, but how can the light be effective if the inside is black and not reflective

Oh, definitely not as effective for sure. Same as when people black out their taillights. Doesn't matter if it's just as bright when they are lit, the reflectors are covered and no longer as effective. Modding is definitely not always about being more useful or efficient, it's about being different or "cool". Usually the latter.
