Default 2004 Rear Road/Tire Noise?

Hi...............I looked at a 2004 convertible, 6-speed with 50k miles. Seemed to have a lot of road/tire noise from the passenger rear, even with windows open. Has Goodyear Eagle F1's Tires are not new and need to be replaced. I am a new to Vettes. Is this typical of C5's?

Any ideas?

Thanks, Scott

That's exactly what we own... some of it's probably those tires... we put non-run flat Nittos on and it is much quieter and I haven't even started sound deadning. We drove coupes and the Vert was quieter to me....

This is a GREAT link

With worn out Goodyears you better believe it's going to have road noise. New non run flats will help but won't totally eliminate it.

Worn out or just old, hard tires will give you a lot of noise. Replace the tires with a new set, especially non-runflats, and the noise should be vastly improved.

Since I am new to Corvettes I don't know what is normal or excessive but this noise sounded like way too much for a 2004 automobile

Our 2003 convertible has nearly new Michelin Pilot Sport A/S run flats.
They're quiet, smooth riding, grip well wet or dry, but are a little pricey.

Is there a local Corvette club in your area -- maybe get a test ride in a member's C5?
If you fill in your location/profile -- there could be a forum member close by.

When we started looking we went to a big dealership in a large town and looked up adds for cars we might be interested in on the way to and from the dealership.... we were able to compare the coupe, convertible and FRC stick and auto.... go drive some, before you commit.

Swerve down the road at a safe speed. If the sound gets louder and then quieter it is the wheel bearing. I had this issue in my 03 coupe.

It's normal to hear a lot of noise from the rear of the car. Old GY tires seem to transmit the noise right inside....they also seem to get noiser when more worn.

It's a fiberglass tub in back with a couple small pieces of foam under the carpet. It amplifies road noise. A divider will help some, but to really fix it you need to put down some proper noise insulation. I did just that with some BXT Raamat II from Raamaudio. Now at 70mph, windows down and radio blasting, I can have a normal conversation with my passenger. No way I could do that before.

Took me an afternoon to cover every inch of the tub to behind the seat, plus the vertical wall behind the seats...the metal plate resonates sound. When I replace the speakers I'll do the doors also...

I know the F1 Goodyears we had were HORRIBLE ... the sound would change with the texture of the surface of the road....that may be what you are hearing....Nitto tires will help that a LOT ... I know... been there done that!
It's not going to sound like a Beemer or Caddy... it will take some work to make it quiet...

Yes.............good advice and I went to look at a very low mileage 2002 convertible but it was not registered and couldn't drive it. Guy says he bought it from an old lady out of state and was going to give it to his wife for a Florida car but she wants something newer...........
